How To Remove Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows Update

Kb2990214 is legitimate and it should be installed. 

This will probably work....

I have advised my clients to do what I have dreaded doing for years -- turn off Automatic Windows Update. 

The problem is compounded by an incessant drive by Microsoft to install Windows 10 on your computer with out your permission.  They keep re-installing KB3035583 (that is the enabler) on your computer, even if you uninstall it.  The result is the huge download and then constant nags without an apparent way to say no.

So I have advised my clients to shut down WU.  Once a month on the 2nd Tuesday, they will get an email from me advising to turn on WU and then to reject specific updates like KB3035583.  After updating, they will turn automatic updates off again.

If you see the Windows flag on the bottom right of your screen, chances are pretty high, your computer already has the Win10 file. Even if you do not, it may be on your computer by now anyway.  Here are instructions on how to rid yourself of it:

It is likely Win10 has already downloaded to your PC.  If you are using windows 7, and have not installed win10 and do not want it, here is a procedure that I have used many times and it works. 

1. Take Windows Update off automatic -- Never check
2. Task Manager, processes, find and end GWX.exe
3. Control Panel, Uninstall a program, View installed updates, WAIT a long time till you see the green bar completes its long trip to the right
4. Now, search for KB3035583, uninstall it
5. Restart the PC
6. Disk cleanup, do the 2nd step for System -- this takes a while
7. You should find a file there that is anywhere from 4 to 8 Gigabytes.  It is the Win10 downloaded file. Put a check mark on that item.
8. OK, Delete Files
9. Restart
10. The startup will take a long time while it finishes cleanup

I have followed all the process from 1 - 10. The file $Win ~BT is still there and unable delete the file, anyway possible. The Diskcleanup did the job, the Windows 10 update file in the C: drive - Boot drive for Windows 7.

In administrator unable change and "permission denied" to delete the about 1056 GB in the hard disk. The "TrustedInstaller" permission is not granted/unable change in properties. No GTW icon in the left hand corner.

Please help!!!!

Why Microsoft make this hard to delete this simple task?

I am sorry to have to tell you this, but I strongly suspect your best next course of action is to re-install Windows 7.

If you are going to do a re-install, you may be able to take your data off first.  Remove the hard drive and put it into a USB external drive housing.  Connect to a working PC, copy the data off.

Always check to ensure the hard drive you are about to rebuild is actually sound from a hardware perspective.  Download and run your hard drive manufacturer’s drive testing software.

First off, you want to try a System Repair disk to boot the PC.  It may be more successful in fixing and offer other alternatives.  If you do not have one, go to any other PC that has windows 7 with the same bitness (32/64).  Start globe, All Programs, Maintenance.  You need just a blank CD.  When you boot, ensure that you are in fact booting on that CD and not the hard drive.  Usually pressing F12 will lead you to the option to do so.

If that does not work, you are likely into a re-install.  Takes a lot of time, but not all attended time.

1. Factory restore — replaces everything on the hard drive with exactly what it had on it when you bought it
2. Full Clean install.  The only absolutely sure way to have a perfectly clean system.

You will need a Win7 install disk for a full clean install.  You will need a legal product code and the win7 disk must match the edition of the code and its bitness (32 or 64)

I don't want to upgrade to Win 10 (from Win7) just yet but when I run Windows Update,  the Windows 10 upgrade starts. I can see there are many Win7 updates waiting too but cancelling the Win10 upgrade means no other updates get installed.  I've uninstalled KB2990214 and have rerun Windows Update (as suggested in other threads) but starting Windows Update still starts the upgrade. 

Is there any way to totally remove the Win10 upgrade so I can do the rest of the Win7 updates?  When I look at updates I've hidden,  I can see "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" and it's not selected.  Thanks in advance!

I agree with Joe and can't rid my computer of this Windows 10 "Virus."  As Joe indicated, it is impossible to run Windows Updates because Windows 10 always starts when the upgrade process starts.  I've tried hiding it, and nothing works.  I've contacted Microsoft and there seems to be an attitude of "We don't really care!" in every response.  Joe, and anyone else who would like to communicate with me, please do so at ******@yahoo.com   Maybe if we organize under 1 voice, someone will listen to us.  They have the solution, and we know it.  Let's get this done and out of our Computers.  Maybe we should contact Legal!

I agree with you.  Asking for help doesn't mean we should be treated badly.  This situation seems to have many of us frustrated.

It has got me beat Microsoft should put out a fix as I am NOT downloading Win 10 again!

It has PROBLEMS!

Microsoft is GREEDY and I am NOT going to pay for things that are free on 7 and cost on 10.

So stick IT MICROSOFT!
