Windows 8.1 update fails.

Since the last "Patch Tuesday" on June 9, none of the important and other available updates will install. This is my last attempt to find a solution to the issue. I tried everything: troubleshooting, chat with MS Support for two(!) hours, googling all sorts of forums. All tis with no results. Remarkably, even MS chat from Answer Desk was unable to help. I cannot believe it that there is no help/support from MS available. That, if it is true, is very sad to say the least. I am sure that there is somebody at MS who could help/support to get the issue resolved but where is he or she??? I have been working on the issue at least 3 hours a day since June 9!!

The PC runs perfectly on the other hand. The errors that appear when looking into the details in the update history are the following ones:

  1. 800F0922
  2. 80071A91

both appear always,

  1. 80246010
  2. 80240054

both appear only a couple of times but the 2 above.

There is NO clear explanation for these errors or where the source may lie. This is in a way ridiculous. Why show them when no solution is offered at all?

Is there anyone at MS who can help??? If not, I am forced to reinstall Windows 8 from the purchased DVD and go then through the whole reinstallation and update process.

The copy of your System Information file contained an incomplete report. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file. To access your System Information file select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type msinfo32 and press the ENTERkey. Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload the file to your OneDrive, share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

A lot of problems arise from setting Windows Update to automatically update. You may prefer to change this setting. Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, Control Panel, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” and click on OK.

You may have a single update that causes all in the batch to fail to install. If this occurs you should install one at a time so that you can find out which update is causing the problem. Manually installing and restarting your computer also allows you find out more quickly whether the problem is resolved. Automatic updating is a scheduled operation, which may execute up to 24 hours later.

Security Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3055642)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 x64-based Systems (KB3023222)

Please select Start, Control Panel, Windows Update, Check for Updates. Check the boxes before the updates you want to install (KB3055642) , click on Install and click again on Install in the next window and the process of installing starts. You should let the process proceed without interruption. Multi-tasking at the time updating is in progress is unwise. The progress window will tell you what is going on. You need to be patient.

Please repeat the procedure in the previous paragraph for update KB3023222.

    Please tell me what happens.

You have some problems not obviously linked to the inability to install updates.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator from the drop down menu. Type *cd* and press ENTER. Type "chkdsk c: /r" without the quotes and hit ENTER. Make sure you include the spaces indicated. Enter Y when asked whether you wish to run chkdsk on restarting the computer. Type exit, press the ENTER key and restart the computer.

An easy way to see past chkdsk reports is offered by Treesize:

    http://www.jam-software.com/treesize\_free/

Place a shortcut to Treesize on your Desktop, right click the icon and select Run as Administrator to open Treesize. When you open Treesize select Scan from the Menu and you will see a list of drives. Click on C and it will generate a list of Folders. Expand System Volume Information and chkdsk and you will see past chkdist logs listed. Click a log and it is opened by Notepad. The date of the log is given after Chkdsk in the format YYYYMMDD. Please upload a copy to your OneDrive a post a link here.

Please run System File Checker. Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, and click Command Prompt (Admin) on the drop down menu. Type cd* and press the ENTER key. Type sfc /scannow and press the ENTER key*.** Please say what is reported when the check completes.

After the process has finished, you may receive one of the following messages:

•Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

•Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

•Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

•Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

    Phantom,

The sentence: ..., I am at the end of my Latin; is a saying that is used to express something like I am at the end of line, meaning having nothing more to solve an issue. I di not know it is unknown here. Ok.

Now to the IMAGE Thing again**.** I do not have an image as suggested, and I would not know where to find it, if there were one, sorry. I even do not understand the description, I am sorry but maybe something is blocking my brain. I have never made an image of the Windows OS, because there was no reason.

On the Windows Update Driver: I do not understand why the removal is supposed to be a MS solution.

For everyone: I have here the link to the files that Gerry wanted to see. I made a mistake twice and so the link was not working. Hope it works this time. If not then I do not know what to do.

OKAY, Lets take this one at a time:

I am sorry but I do not understand this "Image" thing. When I look at Disk Management, I find this:

System: 100MB containing (System, Active, Primary Partition) Healthy

OS (C:): (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) Healthy

     >>>>>> What your looking at is a disk description of your OS Partition (C Disk in your case), IMAGE  That can be **Backed Up as a whole contiguous IMAGE.**This could be done SECTOR by SECTOR but is not usually necessary.

(It is done this way, as opposed to a Directory and File backup, so that one can RESTORE ones IMAGE directly to Disk and Partition and still have it ACTIVE and BOOTABLE!!!)

Be advised that all disks/partitions, whether they are Active and/or Bootable can be backed up as an Image but often are only backed up as Directories and Files, if there is no Operating System involved.

Therefore, long story short, when one looks at a disk or partition, one is looking at an Image of one kind or another.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I have tried all the good advice given here with no result. I am still stuck where I was on June 9. Because of this situation, I asked my self a simple question: Shall I reinstall because there is no solution in sight? The answer to the question is YES, reinstall.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>> You are(we all were) trying to accomplish something that was NOT POSSIBLE!!!! Microsoft and/or Intel made a mistake! I believe your image (of windows, your apps and possibly data) is probably just fine as it was at the beginning of June.

Your trying to make a decision with insufficient information and understanding as we all were. Experience TOLD some of use that this was going to be a MS WU problem. It was always a MS problem NOT YOUR PROBLEM.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Unless there is a solution, I have no other alternative than reinstalling. With a solution I mean: simple, straightforward etc., nothing quirky or such. Apparently even MS seems to have no clear suggestion.

    >>>>>>>>>> Microsofts' solution is to withdraw the Driver from Windows Update and Microsoft Update. If you check WU(and where you hid it) it should be gone, especially after you run "Check for Updates".

I have 2 W 8.1 Pro partitions, it is gone from both.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Please, do understand my frustration. I have gone through many issues with almost every version of Windows, starting with Windows 95. There was always some way out or a good solution to a problem, and in 90% of the cases I solved an issue myself, but in this case I am at the end of my Latin.

    >>>>>>>>>I feel quite bad that there is a language barrier involved with this. Unfortunately for you(fortunate for me, I only know English and live in Canada) this world is working in English more and more. Having said that, after all this time(since 1995) I am very surprised that you do not have an understanding of; Disk image, partition image, and OS image? The .iso filetype is Imaged Operating System, that can be burned directly to DVD, BluRay and USB Thumb Drives.

Another form of Image. .vhd and .vhdx meaning Virtual Hard Disk and Extended are both Images.

Microsofts' latest Image Filetype is .esd, which is a Highly Compressed Image(I do not remember exactly what ESD stands for). This is how MS is distributing W 10.

Paragon(Hard Disk Management Suite) out of Europe has their own Image filefypes for backing up disk and partition Images.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I really hope this translates well and helps answer your questions and expands your understanding. By the Way, all other OS's have and are Images as well.

I have helped you all I can for now, Good Luck!!!

    All my Best,

    Crysta

I sure hope you didn't do this, as Microsoft has with drawn the Intel Driver update.

I know it is hard to learn all of these things but I recommend that now you reread this post and the other 5 page post on this subject as there is alot of good teaching in them. Try to side step the misguidance now that you know the out come of this issue.

Your image is just fine, I really do hope you kept it. :)
