Windows 8.1 update fails.

Since the last "Patch Tuesday" on June 9, none of the important and other available updates will install. This is my last attempt to find a solution to the issue. I tried everything: troubleshooting, chat with MS Support for two(!) hours, googling all sorts of forums. All tis with no results. Remarkably, even MS chat from Answer Desk was unable to help. I cannot believe it that there is no help/support from MS available. That, if it is true, is very sad to say the least. I am sure that there is somebody at MS who could help/support to get the issue resolved but where is he or she??? I have been working on the issue at least 3 hours a day since June 9!!

The PC runs perfectly on the other hand. The errors that appear when looking into the details in the update history are the following ones:

  1. 800F0922
  2. 80071A91

both appear always,

  1. 80246010
  2. 80240054

both appear only a couple of times but the 2 above.

There is NO clear explanation for these errors or where the source may lie. This is in a way ridiculous. Why show them when no solution is offered at all?

Is there anyone at MS who can help??? If not, I am forced to reinstall Windows 8 from the purchased DVD and go then through the whole reinstallation and update process.

Have you removed all that ADW Cleaner found?

To identify what loads when you boot use Autoruns (freeware from Microsoft).

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

With Autoruns you can uncheck an item, which disables it from starting, or you can right click an item and then delete it. If you uncheck you can recheck to re-enable the item. It is a much safer approach than editing the Registry and better than using msconfig.

Run Autoruns and select the Everything tab. Click File, Save and, using the scroll to the right, change the “Save as type” option from Autoruns Data (*.arn) to Text (*txt). The file name changes to AutoRuns.txt. Click the Save button and upload the file to your OneDrive as a shared file and post as a link here.

Please restart your computer, allow 30 minutes for the system to run before uploading further information so that the impact of making changes can become apparent.

Please provide an updated copy of your System Information file. To access your System Information file select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type msinfo32 and press the ENTERkey. Select File, Export and give the file a name noting where it is located. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. The system creates a new System Information file each time system information is accessed. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy. Please upload the file to your OneDrive, share with everyone and post a link here. Reports in normal mode preferred. Please say if the report has been obtained in safe mode.

Please upload and share with everyone fresh copies of your System and Application logs (two files) from your Event Viewer to your One Drive and post a link here. You can remove the earlier copies of the logs from your OneDrive.

To access the System log select the keyboard shortcut Win+R, type eventvwr.msc and press the ENTER key. From the list in the left side of the window select Windows Logs and System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files. Do not place the cursor in the list of reports before selecting Action from the menu. Do not clear logs whilst you have a continuing problem.

here are the 7 important updates:

    Security update foe CAPICOM (KB931906)

    Cumulative Sec. upd. f. IE 11f. x64based systems (KB3058515)

    Sec. upd. f. Flash Player f. W 8.1 x64 b. syst. (KB3074219)

    Sec. upd. f. W 8.1 x64 b. syst. (KB3057839)

    Sec. upd. f. W 8.1 x64 b. syst. (KB3062760)

    Update for W 8.1 x64 b. syst. (KB3000850)

There are also 32 optional updates.

Note: the CAPICOM update has installed correctly, but appears again and again. I found that this update does not apply at all. I have MS Office 2010 Student installed.

I removed/uninstalled the five programs using Revo Uninstaller, which also removes some registry entries.

I have used Adwcleaner and Speccy since more than one year and had run it infrequently. Adwcleaner never found anything significant. I never run my PC under pressure (I am a non-gamer, etc.). Also the PC is located in a cool room and has two inside fans. Temps. never went over 70 degrees Celsius.

Here is the link to the two reports requested:

    All important updates failed again!

Please list the 7 Important updates being offered.

You have to run Treesize as Administrator to be able to see the System Volume Information folder where you should find the chkdsk report.

    Please remove:

    Glary Utilities 5

    Smart Defrag 4

    Wise Disk Cleaner

    Wise Registry Cleaner

    Sophos Virus Removal Tool

Select the keyboard shortcut WIN+S to access Search and type in the box Programs and Features and click Programs and Features in the list below. Place the cursor on the programme name e.g., Glary Utilities 5, right click and select Uninstall from the drop down menu. Repeat the procedure for the other four programmes and when you have finished restart your computer.

Please download and run ADWCleaner and upload a copy of the report produced to your OneDrive. Remove all that it finds. :

Please run Speccy and upload a copy of the report it produces to OneDrive. It helps to obtain the report at a time when the system is under pressure and temperatures may be higher than normal:

    Gerry,

I will start with a new sysinfo32 file:

    http://http://1drv.ms/1HLIBnh

This time it should be complete. I think the first time I moved the cursor not out of the window quick enough. This time I did it with keyboard.

I changed the Windows update to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them”.

This resulted to 7 Important and 30 optional (recommended) updates being listed.

Now KB3066542 was not in the list of updates for June 9. I downloaded that update from MS and when I tried to install it failed with the message that it is NOT applicable to my system. It also said that it is only applicable to Windows 7, even though on the website it said for Windows 8.1. Very peculiar.

KB3023222 is already installed with the update in May 2015.

I then ran chdsk c: /r as admin. (which I had done at least two weeks before). Cannot find the report at all. in the Event Viewer. The recommended program from Jam did not help. As such, the program is very useful. Thanks for that tip.

Last I ran as admin. sfc /scannow (had also run it before several times) with the result of this message:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I checked the Service and it was running, It starts automatically (delayed)

So, this is all I did today following your directions.

By the way, I lived in Portsmouth, and in Havant, Hants. in the eighties.

The copy of your System Information file contained an incomplete report. Do not place the cursor within the body of the report before exporting the file. You need to allow a minute or two for the file to be fully populated before exporting a copy.

Please provide a copy of your System Information file.

A lot of problems arise from setting Windows Update to automatically update. You may prefer to change this setting. Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, Control Panel, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” and click on OK.

You may have a single update that causes all in the batch to fail to install. If this occurs you should install one at a time so that you can find out which update is causing the problem. Manually installing and restarting your computer also allows you find out more quickly whether the problem is resolved. Automatic updating is a scheduled operation, which may execute up to 24 hours later.

Security Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3055642)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 x64-based Systems (KB3023222)

Please select Start, Control Panel, Windows Update, Check for Updates. Check the boxes before the updates you want to install (KB3055642) , click on Install and click again on Install in the next window and the process of installing starts. You should let the process proceed without interruption. Multi-tasking at the time updating is in progress is unwise. The progress window will tell you what is going on. You need to be patient.

Please repeat the procedure in the previous paragraph for update KB3023222.

    Please tell me what happens.

You have some problems not obviously linked to the inability to install updates.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click Command Prompt, and click Run as administrator from the drop down menu. Type *cd* and press ENTER. Type "chkdsk c: /r" without the quotes and hit ENTER. Make sure you include the spaces indicated. Enter Y when asked whether you wish to run chkdsk on restarting the computer. Type exit, press the ENTER key and restart the computer.

An easy way to see past chkdsk reports is offered by Treesize:

    http://www.jam-software.com/treesize\_free/

Place a shortcut to Treesize on your Desktop, right click the icon and select Run as Administrator to open Treesize. When you open Treesize select Scan from the Menu and you will see a list of drives. Click on C and it will generate a list of Folders. Expand System Volume Information and chkdsk and you will see past chkdist logs listed. Click a log and it is opened by Notepad. The date of the log is given after Chkdsk in the format YYYYMMDD. Please upload a copy to your OneDrive a post a link here.

Please run System File Checker. Select the keyboard shortcut Win+X, and click Command Prompt (Admin) on the drop down menu. Type cd* and press the ENTER key. Type sfc /scannow and press the ENTER key*.** Please say what is reported when the check completes.

After the process has finished, you may receive one of the following messages:

•Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

•Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

•Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

•Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
