KB3038314 Fails to Install get the error 80092004.

KB3038314 which was recently deployed by Windows update refuses to install.  This is a 64 bit Win 7 Pro machine running IE 11.  I've tried both the Windows Update web install method and downloading the update separately and both methods fail.  The update is part of MS15-032 released on April 14 (Patch Tuesday).  Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution?  After the update fails there is a failure code of 80092004 displayed and a message that says "Windows Update encountered an unknown error.  I have tried the Microsoft Fixit Tool and uninstalling IE 11 and reinstalling.  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

The windows servicing devs were able to repro the problem and understand the cause.

They are working on a plan to fix this without risking regression or disruption to those who installed the KB successfully, i.e. those with existing fully patched systems who updated April 14th (Patch Tuesday).  That is, of course, the majority of Win7 systems out there.  I got caught, like you, trying to clean install from media after April 14th.

Some of the patch juggling and acrobatics described in various posts in this thread may be potential work arounds as they change the sequence that the system sees these updates.  I'm particularly optimistic about one.  I'll try and see how it goes when I get home (late night).

I'll update when there's something definite about an official fix (no acrobatics required), though you may see it first as just a new update to install.  I don't represent or work for the Windows servicing team.  I just got bit by the same bug as all of you and am trying to help.

    Thanks,

    David

    Hi Everyone,

Can I ask.... do you have the Google toolbar installed?

    try

on the GTB settings (the spanner icon on the GTB) there is a setting (I think... I no longer use the GTB ... ever) for "Notify me is a web site tries to change my default search engine" (or something like that)....

    switch it off

alternatively you can manually install the update from

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46516

but I am guessing that your issue has something to do with the Google toolbar's settings.

    Regards.

    This worked for me:

    • Installed all updates with only KB3038314 left to install.
    • Installed IE10 + reboot (which has KB3038314 installed via the update process in the setup)
    • Uninstalled IE10 + reboot (left me with IE8 RTM)
    • Installed IE11 through the offline installer with switch /update-no so that no updates are installed during setup.
    • After restart IE11 RTM is installed and 3 updates are available, KB3038314, KB3021952, KB2961851. They install without trouble.

Thanks alot, this worked after having to run the offline installer with /update-no switch two times. It said it wanted an update (even with the switch) the first time, and failed.  Also, I had to realize that IE11 was uninstalled before trying this....I've tried every other solution on this forum, and off, with no luck. This was at last a success:D!

I uninstalled and installed new IE 11 download. Version says it has the patch but still shows and fails to install.
