KB3038314 which was recently deployed by Windows update refuses to install. This is a 64 bit Win 7 Pro machine running IE 11. I've tried both the Windows Update web install method and downloading the update separately and both methods fail. The update is part of MS15-032 released on April 14 (Patch Tuesday). Has anyone else experienced this issue and found a solution? After the update fails there is a failure code of 80092004 displayed and a message that says "Windows Update encountered an unknown error. I have tried the Microsoft Fixit Tool and uninstalling IE 11 and reinstalling. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

DrewMacdonald downloaded a wrong version of the standalone update. An x86 update is not applicable to an x64 Windows installation, etc. I made the same mistake one time too.
I didn't experiment to see if a Japanese update would install on a US installation or if a Windows 8 update would install on a Windows 7 machine, etc. Some updates do work that way, some don't, but I didn't try with this one.
Had the same trouble as everybody else but with a twist! I noticed Windows Update was failing after only downloading 11% (like many other people) and the Fixit made no difference so I surfed off to Microsoft and downloaded the standalone update : when run it told me that "this update is not applicable to your machine" and quit normally, not as a failure to install.
Fresh install of W7Pro this morning, been updating all day, all updates fine except this one ...
so why is Windows Update trying to install it I wonder ??

This was on a PC where KB3038314 had never been installed yet. Windows 7 x64, SP1 from offline package, IE 11 from offline package, and around 150 updates from online Windows Update, taking care to install all relevant updates except for KB3038314. The first failure comes from online Windows Update (11% downloaded before failing) and the second failure comes from trying to install the offline MSU file.
David Goe, please tell me if you download that file. I'll probably delete it in a while.

This solution worked for me, however I used a different IE11 offline installation package, because the one linked in VeganTommy.nett`s post does not want to install until I am offline, but after going online it installed the version including the KB3038314 patch, so I was back to the same loop.
I tested the solution only with English windows no other language packs.
So what I did:
I downloaded the IE offline package on another PC, and put on a pendrive, so the freshly installed PC was offline all the way until IE11 was successfully installed.

As a default setting it offers the wrong package, so click on change system link, above the select language drop box, and make the bellow selection.
Download the IE11 offline installation package put on a pendrive and install on the freshly installed PC.
It is very important to go online just after the IE11 installation completed because during the IE11 install it tries to connect to the internet and check for updates and finds the KB3038314. If you are offline than it will install the IE11 with update KB2841134.
Onwards from this point, your PC, from patching point of view, is similar to PCs installed before the release of our famous KB3038314 update on 14th April, 2015.
If you are ready with the IE11 install you can go online and use windows update to install all updates, including the KB3038314.
