PC games not in fullscreen in Windows 10

I really appreciate your answer to my question, but for the most part it's Greek to me. My older games play in a format about the size of this message box with black borders all round. I don't know if I have version 1709 but I'm assuming so since updates are automatically downloaded. I have intel and have been looking at the graphics control panel but don't see the compatibility option you mention. I guess there is an answer to my problem? Would you mind terribly walking this non-techie through this step by step. Thank you again for replying, you're the best.

By full screen do you mean full wide screen without borders, or are your games running in a Windows rather than full screen ?

• Some games will launch in a Windows if you click on anything while the game is loading. Generally tapping Alt + Enter should

put the game in full screen mode.

• The way Win10 does screen scaling and how it deals with aspect ratio has been changed several times since this thread was started. As such it should have been closed, but...

With update version 1703 Win10 returned control of aspect ratio to the graphics processors control panel, rather than Win10

forcing games with a maximum resolution that is native to 4:3 aspect ratio to run with black bars rather than allowing

the user to force Full Screen on these old games as had been the case with previous Windows.

However the default Win10 setting is to Maintain Aspect Ratio, which will make low res games run with a border.

With Nvidia graphics the option in Nvidia Control Panel to force Full Screen can be found under Display > Adjust desktop size and position.

Intel has a similar option - Scale Full Screen - in the Intel HD graphics control panel

- A lot of older games don't fit the screen properly if you use a Custom Scale Factor (in Windows Display Settings).

For these games you need to use the Compatibly option > Override High DPI Scaling Behavior( Application )

( R/click games Shortcut > Properties )

• This option was required a few Win10 updates back, but has returned with update version 1709.

Windows will force this setting on a lot of games that don't need it, but misses many that do.

Hi Ben, I'm stilling looking for a way to play all my older games in full screen on Windows 10.  Resolution is set at highest, full screen box checked in games. Have they come up with a fix for  this yet?

Thanks for the reply! I too am on system with integrated graphics, an Asus T100 book or some such. I knew I had a real problem on my hands when plugging into an external monitor my display wasn't stretched. I recently got the update and tried again and the quake 1 and 2 games work great!

Dgvoodoo does fix some odd ball rendering issues in direct draw and direct3d so I'll stick with it in some cases, but often the simpler solution is best. Also I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to aspect ratios so lots of 4:3 enforcing. dgvoodoo has been around for 10+ years on vogons and such. I didn't start having problems until my old Windows 98 legacy machine finally went to silicon heaven.

If you're brave you can put dgvoodoo and associated dlls into your safe list, but that is a lot of work. The simpler solution is often the best. I've already invested my time in dgvoodoo and it's a pain to clean without reinstalling games.

tried dgvoodoo. Norton kept flagging it as a heuristic virus though so no thanks. 

After updating to the anniversary windows 10 upgrade i figured out a solution, through much trial & error.

If youre rig is integrated like mine, you first go to display properties & change font size to 100%., in windows explorer.

Next you want to open  the intel hd control panel, display, then make sure the panel fit is set to full screen. 

There should be a checkmark box for the important option, "override application setting"s. Make sure you save the changes.

Those settings allow me to run my older games in full sceen resolution. Finally. Yey me!
