Windows update KB3004394 issues

Windows update KB3004394  causes the following issues on my Windows 7 x64 Ultimate system:

All MMC functions (Event Viewer, etc.) now require Administrator action, although in an Administrator account.

Windows Defender service will not start

The Windows Defender Service Terminated with the following error

%%-2147023113

Removing it  returns the system to normal.

Anyone else experience this?

    Yes, I know - but presumably only some of those who were having problems. There is evidence that uninstalling KB3004394 either manually or using KB3024777 brings its own crop of problems, like having to re-activate Windows or display drivers that stop working. I asked whether there's any danger in keeping KB3004394 if it's not causing problems. This is not at all clear from any of the documentation I can find.

    I'm also concerned about this update - KB3024777 - that seems determined to install itself despite the fact that I don't want it. I've never come across such a persistent Windows update before that won't allow itself to be hidden:

    I was having no problems and allowing KB3024777 to install seemed to result in adding 10 seconds to my boot time. After a few hour I traced the problem to raptr ( parasite), which managed to install itself without my knowledge. I have removed it and all is now fine.

    Unfortunately there are many variations of the problems these two updates cause.

    I don't know if it will help, but I was trying to find if I had the KB2004394 update. I checked in the "View Installed Updates" and didn't see it or KB3024777 either, but I did find them both in "View Update History".

    Why in one and not the other??

    Microsoft has stated that it needs to be removed.

    It is mandatorily checked for a reason. 

    Issue for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 We have found that this update is causing additional problem on computers that are running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This includes the inability to install future updates.

    The KB 3004394 update does not cause any known problems on the other systems for which it is released. We recommend that you install the update on the other systems.

    An update is available to remove KB 3004394 from Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers. For more information, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

    3024777 You cannot install Windows updates after KB 3004394 is installed on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

    If KB3024777 has properly removed KB3004394 neither one will be shown in the list of installed updates, but will be shown in update history.  This is because 3024777 is merely an uninstaller, it doesn't do anything but uninstall the update.

    Uninstalling these updates isn't kicking WGA, the update is causing WGA failures in some - but not all - installs.  I think it's more OEMs that are impacted.
