KB3033929 fails to install and cause a minor "infinite" loop

I'm having problems with the KB3033929 update from the latest run of Tuesday patches. After installation the PC reboots, but during the boot up configuration of the patch it fails and Windows starts reverting the configuration and reboots. And then it starts all over again a couple of times until it eventually boot into Windows. I looked into Windows' setup logs and found the following:  

  • A reboot is necessary before package KB3033929 can be changed to the Installed state.
  • Package KB3033929 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80004005.
  • Initiating changes for package KB3033929. Current state is Invalid Installed. Target state is Staged. Client id: WindowsUpdateAgent.
  • Package KB3033929 was successfully changed to the Staged state.

So what is wrong?

    Here is what I learned from my own experience, and the experience reported by others on this thread.  The problem occurs when booting into Windows from Grub on a different drive than the one where Windows is installed.

    • Booting from a Windows boot on the same drive worked.
    • Booting from a Windows boot on another drive worked.
    • Booting from a Grub boot on the same drive worked.
    • Booting from a Grub boot on a different drive did n ot work.

    In the past I discovered that Windows Backup has problems under the same combination of circumstances.   Its possible that both problems stem from the same cause.

    Booting from a Grub boot on the same drive doesn't work for me. I'm using a 960GB SSD.

    When will this be fixed? It's really starting to become annoying.

    Lex,

    If I were you, I would grab your Windows installation disk, restore the windows boot and try installing the update again.   Chances are that will work, and then you can re-install Grub.   I did that today, and it took me about an hour, all in.

    1. What is the full name of your installed anti-virus application or security suite and when (approx. date) does your current subscription expire? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender) are installed? What third-party firewall (if any)?
    2. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
    3. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial [PICK ONE] come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

    1. Avast Free Antivirus version 2015.10.2.2214 which expire 3/5/2016. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free) 2.0.4.1028 (doesn't run in the background). No firewall other than Windows.
    2. No! I have never used any McAfee product and the last time I used a Symantec product (Ghost) I was running Windows 2000 Professional :-)
    3. Clean Windows 7 x64 SP1 install with an ISO from Digital River. No bloatware here.
    4. I only use Windows 7 so I have no use for a boot loader and I have not installed any.

    I tried installing a standalone version of the update with all non-essential programs closed. Same result :(

    • **C:\Program Files**Avast Software <=this folder

    Select PROPERTIES: What's the CREATED date displayed on the resulting GENERAL tab?

    1. Why and how long has MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) been installed? Is it MBAM Premium or MBAM Free? Has MBAM ever detected & quarantined anything?
    2. Are you in the habit of using "Registry cleaners" (e.g., Registry Mechanic; System Mechanic; RegCure; RegClean Pro; Advanced SystemCare; Registry Booster; McAfee QuickClean; AVG PC TuneUp; Norton Registry Cleaner; PCTools Optimiser; SpeedUpMyPC; PC Doctor; TuneUp Utilities; WinMaximizer; WinSweeper; Comodo System Cleaner; Advanced System Optimizer; CCleaner's Registry Cleaner component)?

    So you're telling me I need to invest an hour of my time ($80) to fix something that already was expensive enough? As if there's not already enough reasons to switch to Linux completely, they are going to take away the one reason to not yet switch; the fact you shouldn't have to use up valuable time to fix your OS after every fart the dev lets fly...

    No, this should be fixed by the guys that are paid to fix it.
