I'm having problems with the KB3033929 update from the latest run of Tuesday patches. After installation the PC reboots, but during the boot up configuration of the patch it fails and Windows starts reverting the configuration and reboots. And then it starts all over again a couple of times until it eventually boot into Windows. I looked into Windows' setup logs and found the following:

  • A reboot is necessary before package KB3033929 can be changed to the Installed state.
  • Package KB3033929 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80004005.
  • Initiating changes for package KB3033929. Current state is Invalid Installed. Target state is Staged. Client id: WindowsUpdateAgent.
  • Package KB3033929 was successfully changed to the Staged state.

So what is wrong?

    Win 7 Pro SP1

    Dell Vostro 430

    Intel i5

    4GB RAM

    Single 500GB HD

All 14 machines in our office are Win 7 Pro Dells of similar vintage, only one is caught in this infinite loop of KB3033929 AND KB3035131 SINCE 3/12/2015. Update History shows the two successfully installed 13 times since 3/12. Yet, still wants to restart and install

Oddly, several other updates have installed since then -Definition for Windows Defender KB915597(Def 1.193.2482.0) on 3/13/ and (Def 1.193.2869.0) on 3/17, also Hotfix for Windows KB947821 on 3/17

Also, IE 11 crashes since this problem arose. KB3032359 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows 7 was installed on 3/11

I have tried System Restore to dates before the problem several times, no luck. WindowsFixIt didn't work. MS Update Repair Tool - no luck, etc, etc

This is a major problem because it is on the company CFO's desktop. A Win 7 re-install is a no-go because this PC has old accounting/ERP software to which we no longer have licenses. All that data is needed in case of an audit.

    Hello Folks,

Just to add my 2 cents:

    Computer is Gateway NV53

    Equipped with:

    AMD Turion II X2 M500

    500GB hdd

    4GB Mem

    Running Win7 Home SP1 64-bit

Laptop has been up to date until this Update KB3033939, but it also has KB3035131(which was installed 3/2015, and still is) and KB2949927(which was installed 10/2014, and still is).  After going back to a previous setpoint to make it boot, I disabled Auto Updates and ran Manual Updates, selected OUT KB3033939 and (re)-installed all other Updates.

I did try to again install KB3033939 but was forced to go back and repeat above procedure to make the machine boot.

As of now I haven't tried to uninstall these updates; KB3035131 and KB2949927, then install KB3033939, but am willing to try.

    What do you guys think?:

I recently went through this issue and finally was able to get the update to install by using MS-Config to set the computer to do a diagnostic start-up, installing the update, then rebooting into diagnostic mode. The update installed and I then rebooted in normal mode.

Either that or my ninth attempt was the charm!

    Thanks to Michaelp52 and others!

I belive the fix for me was to let Windows boot directly from MBR.

My system: Dual boot Ubuntu, Window 7 Prof 64-bit via GRUB on the same HDD, unfortunately with the recovery partition for windows not working any more.

    I used a USB-stick with Ubuntu-desktop and EasyBCD 2.2 as follows:

    1. Boot Windows, install and run EasyBCD, "BCD deployment", "MBR Configuration Optipons", "Install the Windows Vista/7 bootloader to the MBR", "Write MBR".
    2. Tried to reboot, no luck.
    3. Boot on Ubuntu USB-stick, flip the bootflag with fdisk from the Ubuntu partition to the Windows partition.
    4. Now Windows boots and Windows Update succeeded with KB3033929.
    5. Boot on Ubuntu USB-stick again and flip back the boot flag from Windows partition to the Ubuntu partition.
    6. grub-install /dev/sda did not work, complains something about /boot.
    7. mv /boot /boot2
    8. Create a mount point and mount Ubuntu partition on harddrive.
    9. ln -s /<Ubuntu>/boot /boot
    10. Now grub-install /dev/sda works and I have my old dual boot via GRUB again.

    Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit

I wanted to make one last effort to install KB3033929, what I tried:

First I disconnedted my second HD with Windows XP installed.

    1.  Ran my Original Windows 7 SP1 installation DVD.  Rebuilt my BCD using Bootrec /Rebuilbcd.  Ran the recovery repair task, which reported no problems.    Booted back into my Windows and checked for updates, selected to install the KB3033929, restarted the system as directed.   System  rebooted and installation got to 77% and failed.  Update reverted, system restarted back to Windows 7.

    This automated method failed.

    1. Downloaded from M/S for manual update installation file:  Windows6.1-KB3033929-X64.MSU for Windows 7 SP1.   (I would think the file name would say Window7.1 ??).

Ran this update also as administrator.  This manual update also failed and reverted.

    This method failed.

    1. Tried uninstalling KB3035131, then tried number 2 above again, exact same results.  Re-installed this update again with no problem.

Previously and again, I ran the Update Fixit tool on the M/S support site, which reported no error.  I also tried to install the update with the Clean Boot instructions as listed on M/S support site.  I also downloaded and installed:

System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014]

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821

I also ran the system file checker:  sfc /scannow

    None of this helped.

I use McAfee anti-virus, and for all the above I unchecked the box for system file protection, did not matter.

I have seen nothing from Microsoft concerning the resolution of this issue, why some systems can update and others cannot, whether they are dual-boot or have never been.  Is this update important enough for me to spend a whole day to totally rebuild my system and all my installed programs, with no assurance that it would even then work afterwards.

    Hiding update again.
