I'm having problems with the KB3033929 update from the latest run of Tuesday patches. After installation the PC reboots, but during the boot up configuration of the patch it fails and Windows starts reverting the configuration and reboots. And then it starts all over again a couple of times until it eventually boot into Windows. I looked into Windows' setup logs and found the following:

  • A reboot is necessary before package KB3033929 can be changed to the Installed state.
  • Package KB3033929 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80004005.
  • Initiating changes for package KB3033929. Current state is Invalid Installed. Target state is Staged. Client id: WindowsUpdateAgent.
  • Package KB3033929 was successfully changed to the Staged state.

So what is wrong?

    I lost 2-desktops that day. (3-11-2015)

    Vista Home Premium / Pentium D

    Win 7 / Core 2 Duo

    My third desktop / Win 7 / Quad Core is working just fine.

    The update has been installed...there were no problems at all. (kb3033929)

    ===

    The Vista machine was built in 2006 by me.

    The Win 7 was built around the year 2009.

    ===

    The Vista PC was developing problems many-many months ago.

    But my Core 2 Duo has always been a perfect desktop.

    ===

    What I did notice the day it died, was a Mis-Match during start up...something about a Media Mis-Match.

    The screen was black with the cursor right at center screen.

    I did a couple of restarts, trying to get to my desktop screen.

    But eventually, F2 into system set up, showed a dead RAM Module present.

    There was never a Error Message about loss of RAM...or changes.

    ===

    I tried to use my Image Recovery HDD. (external recovery method)

    It brought me right back to the black screen with the cursor sitting there in the middle of the screen.

    I tried my OS install DVD.

    It seemed to complete way to quickly.

    And I was again--stuck--with a black screen and a cursor.

    ===

    At that, I unplugged the machine and pulled all the RAM Modules and PCIexpress cards.

    I unplugged the motherboard and pulled the COIN-Batt.

    The desktop is sitting off in the distance.

    I checked the COIN-Batt with a multi-tester and it showed 3.1 volt.

    ===

    I'll try a Clean Re-Install again, using the DVD OS.

    My Quad Core PC (i5) is running great.

    I don't think that the grub boot-loader is the problem -

    even if you have grub/grub2 installed you have an entry in the boot-menu which allows you

    to boot your Windows using the windows boot-loader.

    What I want to know is where does the GRUB boot loader come in when the system has never had Linux anywhere near it the only thing I can see that would do that is if this update messed with the UEFI BIOS boot order and make the bios try booting from itself

    This issue is front page everywhere yet someone asks whether you have MBAM installed.

    "Has Microsoft’s latest Windows 7 update got your computer in an endless restart loop and you don’t know how to fix it? You’re not alone. Apparently a lot of Windows 7 users are having the same problem.

    The patch doesn’t fix any particularly alarming vulnerabilities, so users who have yet to update to KB3033929 should avoid installing the update until Microsoft issues another fix. iDigitalTimes has reached out to Microsoft for comment, but so far the company has not responded our inquiries about when a fix might arrive.

    In the meantime, if you’ve already installed the Windows 7 KB3033929 update and are now stuck in that endless restart loop there are ways to get out of it. "

    1. What anti-virus application was installed prior to 06 March 2015, was your subscription (if any) still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed Avast Free?

    2. Do you have backups of ALL the changes CCleaner's Registry Cleaner has EVER made to the computer? [1]
