'Battery Alert' appears before the 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.', however, ' Cooling Fan Alert' appears after 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.'

Hi,

First of all: I know that I have been having a problem with my HP Laptop Battery, and with its cooling Fan.

However, I am now wondering what detected this error below as long as it was shown even before  the notification saying 'the press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' Thus, if the BIOS detected that there was a problem with the HP Battery storage', then this error should have been listed after 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' was passed.

'HP Battery Alert:    The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.'

That alert lasted about 15 seconds, and then the 'press 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.' is shown.

Next: This is error below showed me::

'The system didn't detect that a cooling fan is operating correctly'

I know that BIOS detected that a problem with 'Cooling Fan' since the Alert of error was shown after passing 'press 'ESC' key for Start-up menu.'

Any comments would be highly appreciated

    You think that I don't need to spread the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU surfaces, before putting heatsink on them down and screw down.

    No, not necessary if the 5 beads of thermal past are placed on the CPU like I mentioned "AND" the heat sink is securely fastened (does not move after it mounted).

    You think that factory don't take the extra effort, so they don't cover the entire surface of CPU?

    Yes

    Anyway, I think that old fan, although it is intact in its outside form, is no longer functioning well at all even if cleaned. I don't know why? 

    As you said there is not much airflow coming from the laptop's air vent, which indicates a possible fan problem. Most often its the fan motor bearings that wear out.

    **Thirdly:**If  setting the internal/Intel GPU to disable  in the BIOS and just use the HD6770 would help keep the CPU running cooler, I would change to only use Intel GPU 'power-saving GPU'  in  'Switchable Graphics' window below.

    Try changing it and see if the CPU runs cooler.

    First one: There is a pad surrounded GPU(have you seen clearly my screen shot below?) Also,  I was told to not disturb the pad on the GPU with thermal compound. So, I have only covered the top/head of  the GPU with thermal compound.

    The CPU doesn't have pads, so I can cover the entire surface of it with thermal compound. 

    I would try that, I put one very tiny bead of thermal past in the center of the CPU and 4 smaller beads, about 2/3rds of the way between the center and each corner of the CPU.

    The other one is: while dismantling my laptop for the first time after coming from the factory,  I only found that the old thermal compound was only put on the tops of CPU and GPU. It was not put on the entire surface of the CPU and GPU. So, the manufacturer didn't apply the thermal on the entire surface of CPU and GPU?

    It's an assembly line process and as such they do not take the extra effort, just what is necessary.

    No two computer manufacture's or even the same manufacture but a different model number may have the same BIOS options  (Intel CPU vs AMD CPU).

    Example: I have two computers with nearly the same motherboard but the BIOS options are not the same. One board includes the additional features that the other board does not have.

    With a different computer manufacture's motherboard, the motherboard is designed to meet the computer manufacture's specifications and therefor will have BIOS options for that computer manufacture wants to include.

Then, what benefits are there from having two GPU(internal GPU and discrete GPU). I noticed that the Internal GPU is got selected/active automatically once laptop got working only on the battery. 

    That an attempt to extend the running time while on battery power. Some laptops have settings in the Control Panel's Power options to reduce the max performance of the CPU to conserve battery power and increase the running time before the battery must be recharged.

    Disable is a different option. Disabling it prevents the CPU internal graphics from ever running.

    Switchable should provide similar results as far as the amount of heat the CPU generates.

    Could you please be a little bit clearer?

    Firstly:

    You meant that no two computer manufacture's BIOS or even the same manufacture have the same BIOS options. However,   a different model number may have the same BIOS options  (Intel CPU vs AMD CPU).

    My laptop is HP Pavilion dv6 with this Product number: LM610EA#A2N. So, you mean if there is another HP Pavilion dv6 with another model/product number, then BIOS may have different options which can include  'Switchable Graphics mode '

    Secondly **:**The BIOS vendor whose screen shot is above is **insyde H20,**and having the option 'Switchable Graphics mode 'Fixed/Dynamic' . Also, My BIOS vendor is also  **insyde H20 AY44 7578,**but it doesn't have this  Switchable Graphics mode 'Fixed/Dynamic'. It also lacks many other options.

    It should cover nearly the entire CPU / GPU after the heat sink is mounted on the CPU / GPU. What I do is apply 4 small dots of compound about halfway toward each corner of the CPU and one dot in the center and then mount the CPU.

    I take extra effort on my computers to ensure nearly the entire surface (excepts the edges) of the CPU has thermal paste to ensure the best heat transfer from the CPU chip to the Heat sink / Fan assembly.

    So, my questions are:

    **Firstly:**Then, the desktop computers are much better than notebook computers since I noticed that almost all desktop computers have a graphics card integrated into motherboard, and another AGP slot to which an external  stand-alone graphics  card can be installed.

    So, in desktop computers, if the integrated graphics card got defective, I have another AGP slot to which I can install  a stand-alone graphics card. 

    Also, if external  graphics card was defective, then I can replace it without replacing the entire motherboard.

    However,  I noticed that  laptops/notebooks(like mine) have a a discrete  graphics card integrated into motherboard, and graphics card integrated into CPU, then if the discrete graphics card integrated to motherboard got defective, then I would need to replace the whole motherboard. If the graphics card integrated into CPU got defective, I would replace the CPU.

    Yes you would need to replace the motherboard, but there are some laptops that have removable graphics cards,

    **Secondly: Could you please confirm this for me:**I noticed that there is a slight difference between desktop and notebooks.

    In desktop computers, the internal graphics card is integrated into motherboard. However,  in notebooks(like mine), the internal graphics card(called:internal GPU) is integrated into  CPU.

    However, In desktop computer, the external stand-alone graphics card is discrete which can be installed into the AGP slot/PCI express.

    However, in notebooks(like mine), the discrete graphics card(called discrete GPU) is integrated into motherboard.

    Again: there are some laptops that have removable graphics cards,

    Firstly: You think that my BIOS does not have this option of Switchable Graphics mode as well, although my motherboard is Hewlett-Packard? This is most strangE . My BIOS lacks many options, although BIOS vendor is insyde H20 AY44 7578, and its motherboard is Hewlett-Packard

    Finally:(This is a little bit longer)

    Although there is no option at all in my BIOS to set internal/Intel GPU to disable, I would like you to let me know:::

    1- Why must I set that? If I had set that, then I could be no longer able to switch between graphics 'power-saving GPU, which is Intel GPU, and high-performance GPU, which is 'discrete GPU/HD6770.

    I thought it would help keep the CPU running cooler.

    2- I can switch between graphics (IGUP) and (DGPU) without seeing Switchable Graphics Mode in my BIOS

    I am nearly sure that there is no option to set the Intel GPU to disable in my BIOS. I have tried that before(could you please take some time to look at my points below).

    a) If that works for you then stick with it.

    You would not be able to.

    If you are still having problems I would replace the fan.

    Firstly: By the way, you don't reply to me if cleaning the old fan with that paint thinner  would not let the fan function again as it is supposed? I will need to replace the fan with a new one even if the physically outside form of the old fan is still fine and good.

    As said before 

    I no longer have a new fan which can be compatible with my laptop, I have returned that new fan to the merchant. I have not used that new fan for two reasons, the first one I am NOT quite sure that that fan would be solve the problem with error 'the system has detected a cooling fan is not operating properly..', the other one is since it would be costing me a lot (about $50 for just a fan, in eBay.com, the Fan/heatsink assembly is sold for $30), so I have returned it to the merchant, although I have hardly found it in Yemen because  HP Pavilion Notebooks parts are not sold in Yemen.

    I have been still asking you about this utility to know if my fan is working well or not since the error 'The system has detected a cooling fan is not operating properly' appears to me again, after I have blown the old fan with a compressed air and cleaned it with a paint thinner. Also, even I have cleaned the exterior vents in the heatskin/metal plate with the paint thinner and with  compressed air.  I.e. While dismantling my computer,  I thoroughly removed dust from all internal cooling components. Also, I ensured that wires from the system and CPU fans are connected to the motherboard securely.

    It could be a defective fan speed sensor in the motherboard.

    Yes, the fan blows air out, and the air is fairly warm, but the air blown out by fan is not very quickely.  The fan is blowing warm air from the computer. 

    Note: I only applied new thermal compound on both of only the tops of CPU and GPU. I didn't cover the entire tops of CPU and GPU with new thermal compound since  I only found that the old thermal compound was only put on the tops of CPU and GPU. It is not put on the entire tops of CPU and GPU.
