KB3035583 Installing Windows 10 using Windows Update?

If you hide it, it will not re-install.  However, Microsoft...have issued several editions of the same update and each one appears to WU as a new one.  The old one (previous edition) does remain hidden, but the new edition of the same update will get installed.

WYSIWYG pretty much anytime an update is Revised and/or when an Optional updates becomes an Important (AKA Recommended) update.

• Important updates are not necessarily security-related.

And I think you'll find that the release of such a revised update will remove the previously-released version from the list of Hidden updates.

No updates will be installed without your explicit approval if Automatic Updates is set to the "Download updates but let me choose..." option. No updates will be downloaded without your explicit approval if Automatic Updates is set to the "Check for updates but let me choose..." option - but any approved updates will be installed without any further prompts. NOTE: Any change you make now will NOT affect any updates already in the installation queue. As far as Automatic Updates is concerned, you've already approved those updates.

[I'll believe the "Automatic updates only" hype when I see it.]

On top of that, starting with Windows 10, you will have no control or visibility of Windows Updates.  They will just happen when Microsoft feeds them, and there will no longer be a schedule.

For the longest time (years) it seems that almost every set of monthly updates includes some that immediately cause problems, blue screens, hangs, etc, etc. (i.e., the "blight" mentioned in the above quote). Users with Windows Updates set to "automatic" usually feel the blunt of this lack of quality in monthly updates. Many customers mitigate this issue by not using the "automatic" setting and waiting weeks (or longer) for the bugs/flaws in the updates to be worked out .... before installing the updates (that is, many customers do not want to be beta testers for Microsoft's monthly update roll-out).

Unless a miracle happens and Microsoft improves the quality of their monthly updates by several orders of magnitude, and if Windows 10 Home users will essentially have "automatic" enabled for updates (with no ability to disable the setting), then I suspect that Windows 10 reputation (and level of customer acceptance) will be far worse than Windows 8.

I hope US, European, Chinese & others authorities will cool Microsoft down.

I did not say that it would reinstall, I said it would be back--meaning, even though the user has used the Customize feature to Hide the Win10 icon, and even though it vanishes from the system tray during the current session, it reappears after the computer reboots.

I believe that this provides the third indicator of Microsoft's determination to take control away from the customer.  In the past the expectation would be that if you use the Customize feature to hide an icon, it stays hidden until you choose otherwise.  Quietly, because their perfidy would be plain for all to see if it were disclosed, Microsoft has changed that policy to keep the Win10 icon in our faces.

For those who are keeping score, the first indicator was misrepresenting the nature and purpose of the update.  The second, which I have seen in a couple of places, is fending off criticism by telling customers that they can hide the icon, while conveniently failing to mention that it works only for the current session.

Vinod - I find it deeply disturbing how MS hijacked the W7 OS and W Update Program, without ANY TRANSPARENCY, and under the disguise as an important update to embed GWX into the OS.  

I'm glad MS is trying to fix the W8 debacle and making the upgrade free for a year, but your customers may perceive this as having been deceived.   And your reply is incorrect; I'm not participating in any W insider program and was hijacked by this "important update".  I'm now cleaning this up on 3 W7 PC's.

How about getting your management together and discussing the above feedback?  A fix....

• Make the update OPTIONAL;
• Describe what the update really is; be TRANSPARENT
• Don't hijack the OS (and W Update) with GWX running all the time; make it a link or side program

Not happy and now seriously looking at another platform for my next laptop....
