Would you please tell me how to prevent the installation of KB3035583 in my computer and if it is already installed, how to remove it? Also, are there other updates that we need to be concerned about that enable this behaviour?
KB3035583 now appears as an Important update in Windows Update and is checked which means it will be automatically installed if the user does not uncheck it. If automatic update is set, it will install without intervention.
There are credible articles that say that Microsoft either has installed or will install changes to my computer that will enable Microsoft to use it as an advertising platform and then install Windows 10 without first obtaining an informed decision to do so. I truly hope this is not true.
On behalf of my clients and their 162 Windows "consumer" computers, I must tell you that we do not grant Microsoft or any other vendor the right to do this. When other Windows players do this, we regard it as malware and take great care to remove it.
Microsoft got to where it is today by selling Windows. We have spent decades learning how to use Windows and billions of dollars buying Windows computers and Windows software. We own these systems. They are ours, not Microsoft's.
Windows Update has earned a huge trust. We trust Microsoft to use Windows Update to keep our computers safe and secure. When Patch Tuesday comes along we install all the updates that Microsoft says are "important." We assume those to be either plugging a security leak or fixing a software error.
We all hope Windows 10 will be something we will want. We will carefully review and consult trusted advisors before we install Windows 10. We have seen Windows 8 and rejected it. Windows 8 is a bad product we did not choose.
Automatically installing Windows 10 on our computers would be a severe abuse of a well-earned trust. Changing our computers to enable them to become advertising platforms is also an abuse.

Thank you Canada! I have Windows Live Essentials in my list of programs,
but ignored it since I wasn't sure what all it contained.
I will definitely try to sort it out, tonight or tomorrow. Going to shut down my Win7 so I can follow your instructions on my friend's Win7 HP with the GWX on it. And all of the WU to be Uninstalled; off line and hope I'm safe from the Invaders there:-)

Not at all sure the list of steps applies if Win10 install has already strated.
The GWX killer app described by Woody Leonhard may be better in that case.
I disagree with Woody on one point the WU setting must be Never.
More on WLM
WLM is an outstanding product. I have been using it for about 4 years now and I have installed it on many client computers, including some that were using Outlook. In my opinion, WLM is a better product than Outlook.
WLM is part of a whole package of products called Windows Live Essentials. It was created a number of years ago in one of those Microsoft attempts to out-AOL, AOL. It failed and the huge staff that created it were dispersed, but the mail item (WLM) was such a success, it keeps dragging Microsoft along.
There is a 2012 version of Windows Live Essentials which will probably work ok for you as long as you do not use "groups" in your contacts. They screwed up that part in the 2012 version. If you do use groups, you want the 2011 version. http://g.live.com/1rewlive4-all/en/wlsetup-all.exe
When you download this, at one point it will ask you which components of Windows Live Essentials you want to install. Uncheck all but the Mail component. When you start WLM for the first time, it will search for importable contacts, mail accounts and mail and automatically import it all. So have your converted files on the computer before you start WLM.
WLM is a very problematic product for Microsoft and many others. In fact, Gmail has recently caused a problem by tagging WLM as a less than secure one. You need to lower the security level on your Gmail account to get it to export to WLM.
The reason WLM is not desirable to them is that it takes away the opportunity to profile you and throw ads in your face on the web mail product. A strength to the average user and a weakness to those trying to make money by pushing those ads in your face.
When you have WLM in place and you have it working the way you want it to. I suggest you change the frequency of checking for new mail from 20 minutes to 2.
Also, I recommend moving the message store from the default location, about 7 levels down up to a higher level so you can easily find it to do backups. WLM includes a Move tool to do this.
Another not well known fact about WLM: If you backup the entire WLM file folder and you at some point need to replace your drive or re-install Windows, that folder will do magical things. You will read that there is no backup of the calendar function -- which is very handy by the way. That is only partly true. If after re-building your system and installing WLM (before you actually run WLM), you replace the default WLM folder in the newly re-created system with the folder you backed up, you will have WLM completely and exactly as it was -- I mean all the folders, mail, contacts, calendar, etc, even the detail setup and options you chose. By this I mean you do not import mail and contacts from backup, in this case
If you have your contacts in a file on your computer, when you first start WLM, it will automatically import them. Same true of mail if it is in one of a few formats.
Microsoft was embarrassed by customer's lack of acceptance for Vista and Windows 8. Microsoft failed to LISTEN to their customers. Microsoft produced versions of Windows that we did not want with features we did not need. Customers rejected those versions.
Now comes Windows 10. Perhaps Microsoft does not want to be embarrassed by customers again rejecting a version of windows that we do not want or need.
One way to avoid having customers reject Windows 10 would have been to actually listen to customers and give us a version of Windows we really want. But apparently, Microsoft does not want to use that method ... instead they appear to be avoiding transparency regarding Windows Updates whose sole purpose seems to be nagging customers into installing Windows 10. And if we try to hide these "nag" Updates, Microsoft unhides them in an attempt to get them installed (regardless of their customer's wishes).
In addition to releasing, re-releasing, and re-re-re-releasing "nag" Updates, it also appears that even in cases where customers do not respond to the nagging (i.e., those customers who do not want to install Windows 10), Microsoft still (in some cases) downloads the Windows 10 installation files. The files total approximately 3 to 6 Gigabytes; the unrequested download uses up network bandwidth and uses up hard disk space when stored on customer's computers. Why would Microsoft download Windows 10 installation files to customers who have not asked for them???? Well, perhaps Microsoft is counting each occurrence of these unrequested downloads as a "Windows 10 installation".
So, when Microsoft releases a statement as to how well customers are accepting Windows 10, perhaps those numbers include cases where customers have received an unrequested download of the Windows 10 installation files.
Rather than resorting to these kind of tricks to boost the numbers, Microsoft needs only to do one thing to get customers to accept a new version of windows ... LISTEN to customer feedback, be transparent about the purpose of Updates, honor customer's request to hide specific Updates, do not force customers to accept/install all Updates (let customers choose which Updates to accept and which to reject), do not send any telemetry data back to Microsoft without customer's explicit permission, and give us a Windows version that meets our needs.
