KB3035583 Installing Windows 10 using Windows Update?

I would not waste my breath expecting Microsoft to do anything in our favour.  FYI, Satya declared a corporate objective to install Windows 10 on 100,000,000 computers within 2 years.  That master over-all objective is what is driving this behaviour. 

World-wide population of Windows computers is estimated to be 150,000,000 computers.  Currently, about half of those are installed in business or institutional settings.  As someone else in this thread correctly pointed out, those business and institutional buyers are simply not going to accept Win10.  In 99% of corporate settings, an IT manager would be handed his/her hat if they proposed such a crazy thing.

I fully expect Microsoft to face that fact and totally separate the consumer market from that market and offer different products and services.  There may be an opportunity down the road if you can find a way to access some of those products, but I fully expect Microsoft will place roadblocks in that path.

I stress again, you will not be able to control your computers' destiny unless you set your WU to NEVER. 

I also suggest it is unreasonable to be applying WU more often than once a month.  The ones that do come out in between patch Tuesday's are more likely to be the ones that you do not want. 

Woody is doing the world a great service by staying on top of these updates and publishing the list for us. 

My recommendation is that you use WU but once per month, on or about patch Tuesday.  Start it looking for new updates.  You will see KB3035583 added to those updates every time you do WU, even if it is twice per day.  I currently have 10 not wanted updates on my list including that one. 

I look after about 150 client computers and feel responsible to protect them against this Microsoft onslaught.  So far I have run into only a few of those computers that have found the dreaded flag, and they know to contact me immediately if they see it.  I clean it up using the procedure I published in this thread.  This happens only in the cases where they have not followed my directions.  So far, not a single client has allowed Win10 on their system.  My clientele are very varied.  Ages 16 to 95.  None are gurus because I will only accept a client if they follow by my rules.  That has resulted in no infections in 13 years.  I also allow only one antivirus product and that is currently Bitdefender Antivirus.  I do not allow any Internet Security product.

FYI, I spend 7 years of my career with a major bank as a Senior Technical Advisor to a group of 25 bankers who served the Tech market.  I have a 50+ year career in Computers.  I know this market better than a lot of people.

In 2 years time, Microsoft will awaken to the fact that Win10 was as big if not a bigger failure as Win8.  There will probably be another executive purge.  Maybe there will be a Win12 that is actually better than Win7.  Meantime hang on to your Win7.   Microsoft has declared support for Win7 through January 2020.  That deadline (just like XP) will be extended if they do not have an acceptable replacement for Win7 by that time.

I've been thinking of why Microsoft has taken this course with Win10. There is no benefit that I can see for Microsoft doing this intentionally. Those that made this decision, whether on purpose or by mistake need to be held accountable. We've all heard about "follow the money." Well, all I see is a loss for Microsoft, not only in money but their relationship with their users. 

I know there is much anger out there and not without cause. There is a sadness also that this has happened and the trust users have had with Microsoft has been broken.

It is up to Microsoft to repair the damage, no matter who caused it.

Hi Canada! I had to turn WU on my friend's Win7 that had the GWX installed on which I had removed in order to see what to uninstall/hide etc.

The 2977759, 3083324, 3090045 and 3022345 were not among the WU. All of the others that you listed from Woody's were and have been hidden. I also hid KB2999226 that another site had suggested.

After there were no more important updates left to install or hide, I went on to a couple of other tasks. Before getting ready to shut down the PC, I checked WU again and guess what important update was listed? If you guessed the KB3035583, you're correct. So, I hid it again. After setting WU to NEVER again, I shut down.

Let's hope Microsoft will see the error of their ways, reverse course and help those users that are having problems not of their own making.

According to netmarketshare, the market share of various Windows versions is as follows:

Windows 7: 56.53%

Windows XP: 12.21%

Windows 8.1: 10.72%

Windows 10: 6.63%

Windows 10 has a long way to go, and Windows 10 may never get any traction in the enterprise market as long as it continues automatically install all updates on customers' computers without giving them a choice. See herefor an effort to get Microsoft to give customers more control over which Windows 10 updates are installed.

In order to increase Windows 10 market share, perhaps Microsoft will use even more tricks designed to get customers to install Windows 10 (and after those tricks are discovered, Microsoft will again apologize and claim they were a mistake).

Even with Windows Update set to "never", be very careful when periodically re-enabling Windows Update to install selected updates.
