KB3035583 Installing Windows 10 using Windows Update?

Would you please tell me how to prevent the installation of KB3035583 in my computer and if it is already installed, how to remove it?  Also, are there other updates that we need to be concerned about that enable this behaviour?

KB3035583 now appears as an Important update in Windows Update and is checked which means it will be automatically installed if the user does not uncheck it.  If automatic update is set, it will install without intervention.

There are credible articles that say that Microsoft either has installed or will install changes to my computer that will enable Microsoft to use it as an advertising platform and then install Windows 10 without first obtaining an informed decision to do so.  I truly hope this is not true.

On behalf of my clients and their 162 Windows "consumer" computers, I must tell you that we do not grant Microsoft or any other vendor the right to do this.  When other Windows players do this, we regard it as malware and take great care to remove it.

Microsoft got to where it is today by selling Windows.  We have spent decades learning how to use Windows and billions of dollars buying Windows computers and Windows software.  We own these systems.  They are ours, not Microsoft's.

Windows Update has earned a huge trust.  We trust Microsoft to use Windows Update to keep our computers safe and secure.  When Patch Tuesday comes along we install all the updates that Microsoft says are "important." We assume those to be either plugging a security leak or fixing a software error.

We all hope Windows 10 will be something we will want.  We will carefully review and consult trusted advisors before we install Windows 10.  We have seen Windows 8 and rejected it.  Windows 8 is a bad product we did not choose.  

Automatically installing Windows 10 on our computers would be a severe abuse of a well-earned trust.  Changing our computers to enable them to become advertising platforms is also an abuse.

    I agree with these points but they don't help me run a machine or software that doesn't have Windows 10 drivers.

    Some of my machines have Windows 10.

    Yes, which is why I have Windows 10 on the machines that can, and have software that can, run with it.

    Unfortunately that doesn't apply to all of my machines.

    Windows 10 is not in itself a problem. The problem is that Microsoft has said they are going to compulsorily download the Windows 10 software to all machines. They have not said that they will switch to Windows 10. Nevertheless receiving the files is still a problem. The machines that I have that can't run with Windows 10 only hsve 32gb drives.

    Since I started researching every non-security update for Windows 7, I have avoided installing several updates that are reported to run background telemetry (even for those who have opted out of CEIP or similar programs), and uninstalled some that had been installed when I was more trusting of Microspy and took all "important" updates without question.

    No matter how reliable Windows 10 updates might be, I am not interested in any o/s that has the potential to install telemetry or other unnecessary updates without giving me the choice of not doing so. Again, as long as I own my devices, I will decide what is installed on them, and will maintain a reasonable expectation of privacy. And again, if Microsoft wants to give me a free device, it can put whatever it wants on it, whenever it wants, and I will base my use of it on the knowledge that it is neither mine, nor private.

    Caveat emptor.

    The Windows Update procedure in Windows 10 lacks flexibility but based on my experience over 5 months I can work round it. The upgrades from one build to another have proved to be problematic for many users but most users currently seeking help with Windows Update have now achieved Build 10586. Another issue is the multitude of updates for Apps. If you opt out of taking Apps Updates, there have not been over many updates over the months so I am not suffering over many interruptions to my use of my Windows 10 computer.

    I may not be a typical user.  I troubleshoot Windows Update problems for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 computers. This means that having seen how many users fall foul of the way updating works, I know how to avoid the elephant traps.

    Thanks anyways, but some of us will not be assimilated. Call us Luddites if you want, but it's not about resisting change for the sake of resisting change. It's about wanting to use the products that best suit our needs. And since Microsoft is not likely to command a massive military force anytime soon, we will continue to have choices, whether they include Microsoft products or not.
