KB3035583 Installing Windows 10 using Windows Update?

Would you please tell me how to prevent the installation of KB3035583 in my computer and if it is already installed, how to remove it?  Also, are there other updates that we need to be concerned about that enable this behaviour?

KB3035583 now appears as an Important update in Windows Update and is checked which means it will be automatically installed if the user does not uncheck it.  If automatic update is set, it will install without intervention.

There are credible articles that say that Microsoft either has installed or will install changes to my computer that will enable Microsoft to use it as an advertising platform and then install Windows 10 without first obtaining an informed decision to do so.  I truly hope this is not true.

On behalf of my clients and their 162 Windows "consumer" computers, I must tell you that we do not grant Microsoft or any other vendor the right to do this.  When other Windows players do this, we regard it as malware and take great care to remove it.

Microsoft got to where it is today by selling Windows.  We have spent decades learning how to use Windows and billions of dollars buying Windows computers and Windows software.  We own these systems.  They are ours, not Microsoft's.

Windows Update has earned a huge trust.  We trust Microsoft to use Windows Update to keep our computers safe and secure.  When Patch Tuesday comes along we install all the updates that Microsoft says are "important." We assume those to be either plugging a security leak or fixing a software error.

We all hope Windows 10 will be something we will want.  We will carefully review and consult trusted advisors before we install Windows 10.  We have seen Windows 8 and rejected it.  Windows 8 is a bad product we did not choose.  

Automatically installing Windows 10 on our computers would be a severe abuse of a well-earned trust.  Changing our computers to enable them to become advertising platforms is also an abuse.

    If you hide it, it will not re-install.  However, Microsoft...have issued several editions of the same update and each one appears to WU as a new one.  The old one (previous edition) does remain hidden, but the new edition of the same update will get installed.

    WYSIWYG pretty much anytime an update is Revised and/or when an Optional updates becomes an Important (AKA Recommended) update.

    • Important updates are not necessarily security-related.

    And I think you'll find that the release of such a revised update will remove the previously-released version from the list of Hidden updates.

    No updates will be installed without your explicit approval if Automatic Updates is set to the "Download updates but let me choose..." option. No updates will be downloaded without your explicit approval if Automatic Updates is set to the "Check for updates but let me choose..." option - but any approved updates will be installed without any further prompts.     NOTE: Any change you make now will NOT affect any updates already in the installation queue. As far as Automatic Updates is concerned, you've already approved those updates.

    I could not agree with you more about your feelings about the misuse of WU.  Microsoft is squandering decades of trust by Windows users.  We have all trusted Microsoft to provide a continuous set of updates that make Windows safer and work better.  This set of updates have nothing to do with what you expect of it.  It is really Microsoft installing a tool on your (you own it) PC to feed you advertising.  The worst part of this story is that they are labeling these updates as "Important", not optional.

    Some of what I have read lately tells me that Windows 10 will bring much more of that.

    On top of that, starting with Windows 10, you will have no control or visibility of Windows Updates.  They will just happen when Microsoft feeds them, and there will no longer be a schedule.

    So far as I am concerned, KB 3035583 is a breach of trust, pure and simple.  The information provided with the update misrepresents what it is for.  The answers that have been provided about how to "hide" neglect to mention that this hides it only for the current session, and it will be back next time you re-boot.

    This Microsoft shift to deception and trickery has caused this longtime user to change his policy on all three computers.  No more automatic updates.  I'll check manually when I get around to it.  And I will inspect the list for KB 3035583 and any other nagware that comes to my attention.  It will cost me more time and effort, and increase the odds that instead of adopting Windows 10, I will jump to another OS.

    This was a huge blunder with strategic consequences.
