Windows 10 - VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE igdkmd64.sys

Bad news on contacting Intel - they bounced me right back to Microsoft. But there has been some progress:

1.) Microsoft's support is tenacious, and calls me daily for updates.  Today, the tech found three failed updates and manually installed them.  My machine was set to automatic update, but these did not "automatically update".  Confirm that these three have been updated:

a.) Surface Firmware Tool.msi

b.) Surface Pro 3 Driver Set.ppkg

c.) SurfacePro3_Win10_150915_0.msi

2.) For want of a nail....etc.  Assuming that it is a thermal problem, I bought a small fan and pointed it at the rear of the Surface Pro while it is in the docking station.   So far, that is working.  It takes away enough  heat to keep me from the BSOD (I hope).   I;ve been running this way for two days without major problems, and no BSOD.   I'll monitor the new drivers and report any prblems, but I think that fan is a permanent "upgrade" to my system.

I asked MS if they had a way to dial down the thermostate on the machine so that the fans would start sooner, run faster and turn off later when the temp hits 70 C, in lieu of an assumed factory set-point of 80 C.  I was told that there was no such setting (or the tech did not know how to access this).

I have been experiencing issues with my Surface Pro 3 running games recently. I don't have a docking station but any game I run will cause the system to crash 1 way or another (including the VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE BSOD).

Things worked fine on Windows 8.1 but since upgrading to Windows 10 I have endless errors. I have tried the old driver, the latest one and also the one from Intel's website via a manual installation. All cause the same problem.

I have tried installing the files you mentioned already but if I try installing the driver set I get a 'Provisioning Error' in a big red box. And if I try installing the SurfacePro3_Win10_150915_0.msi package it says it was unable to find any drivers for my machine...

I've tried disabling the docking station in BIOS but that hasn't helped.

Would appreciate some help on this as I am running out of ideas.

Its well known that Microsoft's Surface tablets have issues with Windows 10 galore

I have Visual Studio, and I can prove its Intel's driver at fault.

If your rig is running at over 75C, I suggest running the cooling at max to prevent degradation

I have taken these steps on my Surface Pro 3 (not even six months old). No joy, same problem. If I have a second monitor connected, it crashes in as little as 20 minutes. I need not do anything particularly fancy with the graphics -- it has done this with nothing more than a text editor running.

I've had the Surface on all day today with no external monitor, and thus far, it has not crashed. Please note that when I have the external monitor, I extend the display so both screens are on. I have not tried other settings.

I think the take-away here is the driver is not sufficient to the task of managing multiple monitors. Quite disappointing.
