Windows 10 - VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE igdkmd64.sys

I have taken these steps on my Surface Pro 3 (not even six months old). No joy, same problem. If I have a second monitor connected, it crashes in as little as 20 minutes. I need not do anything particularly fancy with the graphics -- it has done this with nothing more than a text editor running.

I've had the Surface on all day today with no external monitor, and thus far, it has not crashed. Please note that when I have the external monitor, I extend the display so both screens are on. I have not tried other settings.

I think the take-away here is the driver is not sufficient to the task of managing multiple monitors. Quite disappointing.

It's almost certainly an Intel driver problem (wouldn't surprise me, as Intel just flat fails at almost all software), but as the OEM for the Surface Pro 3, it's MICROSOFT'S responsibility to drive Intel to get a fixed driver and then make it available through Windows Update at least for SP3 owners. (Other OEM's may have to distribute the driver separately, although I think the idea behind Win10 is to unify driver distribution through Win10 updates.)

Bottom line:  Intel's fault or not, MS is still on the hook for a fix. (I know, I was once responsible for all software for Dell's laptop brands, from BIOS, to OS, to drivers, to bundled software...)

My fear is that with the imminent release of the Surface Pro 4, we may never see our Surface Pro 3's fully working with Windows 10 (there are SO many things broken: rotation, docking, input focus on wake, etc...)  I hope I'm wrong.

I've been working on it for the past three days with MS tech support.

Today, they've identified it as an intel problem....sigh.

Within the Intel Graphics program, one can "tune" the card to harmonize the gaming and video hardware acceleration.  This may help some people.  It will not help the Surface Pro 3 people, since this Intel Graphics Program is not accessible in the Surface environment. 

The tech and I also tried updating the driver, but Windows rejected the latest drover for the HD 5000 card, saying it was incompatible.

I've been asked to contact Intel.....

Also having this same problem on a Surface Pro 3.  (I had kinda hoped that Microsoft could at least get the drivers straight on its OWN hardware...)

I "upgraded" to Win 10 about two months ago (I wish I had gone back to 8.1 when I had the chance), and although there have been lots of other brokenness, this problem first showed up for me about two weeks ago - so it sounds like it's associated with a driver update.

My machine now crashes with this error about every 2-3 days, but VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (igdkmd64.sys) crashes have happened as close as a couple of hours apart.

My config is Surface Pro 3 (i5/8GB/256GB), with docking station, and attached Dell P2815Q 4K monitor (medium awful, slow, flaky firmware, don't buy one, but was stable until a couple of weeks ago). 

Windows update says drivers are up to date.  I cannot tell for sure what triggers this error, but since I am usually in Firefox, that's when it's crashed on me - no real reason to believe Firefox is the problem, though, given the nature of the failure, and the fact that I never encountered this error in the previous 8 months I've had my SP3.

Unlike some here, my SP3 will reboot just fine after the error, leaving me to clean up the carnage of work-in-process at the time of the crash.

I fear that Microsoft is now focusing on the upcoming SP4, and those of us who bought SP3s are going to be left to deal with thrice-weekly MICROSOFT FAIL.

I want to love this computer, I really do, but you're not making it easy...

I have Microsoft business working on this issue - I'll report back if they can assist with this problem.

I am expecting a big update next month or possibly early November
