Age of empires II won't work via windows 10

So I was playing age of empires II other day while using windows 7 well upgraded today to windown 10 and now it won't run the start up menu starts but I click play now ... and nothing.how can I fix it

    the Age of Empires Series uses a old and not supported by windows 10 type of code. If it doesn't work in compatibility mode, then try this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ\_nHjZrkzc

    Edit: or buy the steam addition. Maybe if you message steam support with the dilemma and show them a picture of the disc they will give you a free copy?

    I know this is an older thread but hopefully the fix has been verified by now.

    A feeling of nostalgia hit me after I got a new laptop with Win10 64bit OS and wanted to pay AOE II 

    I have the original install CD and it seems to install ok but is unable to run the game. 

    No error messages appear and I have tried many of the past suggested fixes and none have worked.

    Any suggestions on how this is possible?

    I've been fighting this issue for a while now, and basically all they can come up with is to play it in xbox app on windows 10.  I just helped you skip through about 2 weeks of stuff that does nothing but waste time.  I still cannot even get it to work through that app, so good luck and if you find the answer please share so I can actually play the game I also purchased....

    The only fix I have found when you own a Windows 10 computer is to buy a used computer with Windows 8 and use that computer only for playing Age of Empires it works perfect.
