Age of empires II won't work via windows 10

There is not a fix from Microsoft on this issue, and they do not plan on providing one.

I called them, as I own the entire Age of Empires & Age of Mythology collection, and their official response is;

Microsoft security prevents Safedisc copy protection on the disc from running and is not supported in windows 10.

They recommend that you purchase the new Online version of the game.

The patch listed above does not apply to the windows 10 issue, and "gameJackal" costs more than the new game as well as opening your system to security threats, so there are no good options, we just got screwed by Microsoft.

My point is that I should not have to buy the game again at any price, I already own the license for the games.

This problem is the same for AOE II, The Conquerors expansion, and Age of Mythology, I have many hours invested in creating custom Maps, Scenarios, & campaigns that are no longer viable, even if I repurchase the games on Steam.

What bothers me the most is that MS won't even acknowledge the issue, there only response is a laundry list of possible fixes that they know will not work.

The MS support engineer is essentially wasting everyone's time with the advice provided.  "Take two aspirin and call me in the morning" would actually be more helpful.  At least the aspirin might help with the headache you're getting from W10.  Windows 10 no longer supports the secdrv sys driver, and if you are trying to launch your game from a CD, it will not work, no matter how many reboots and compatibility settings you try.  Secdrv made the operating system more vulnerable to attack, and it was a conscious decision my Microsoft to remove it.  They did it on purpose, and while it's possible backlash from this small gamer community may be enough to convince them to release a patch to once again enable it... I wouldn't count on it.  My advice, go back to W7 if these older games are really important to you, or buy a version of the game that doesn't launch from CD.

I have played AOE II HD from steam on Windows 10. I can't promise it will work on every configuration out there though. The more information I can get about your hardware the better I can look into what you are hitting. I will try look at the AOE II disc version.

What version of the game are you playing? from media or from steam? What is your graphics card you are using and driver version?
