Mouse and keyboard input not working after windows 10 upgrade from windows 7.

Perry thanks for sharing. My situation is getting weird. I've reported that my keyboard and mouse failed. That is both my wireless as well as the one built into the laptop. Now today it stopped working again in Word and Excel, BUT this time it was only the letters and numbers that failed. I could still use the navigation keys, delete worked, and the mouse worked fine. 

Then about 30 minutes later everything started working again. 

I'll see if I can figure anything out and continue to post.

A partial update.   The msft keyboard/mouse is in but my upgrade failed as it has in the past.   Could be something wonky from the reversion to Windows 7, so I am recovering to a week old Windows 7 full disk BU.   Once that is done I should have a disk image that will successfully upgrade.   So no real info as of now.   This does make me recall the old Msft OS upgrades where months of driver problems faced all the brave early adopters.    We are somewhere in that cycle, so simply need to accept the upgrades on the machines where it appears to work and roll back and be patient on systems where it doesn't.   I will let folks know later this afternoon Pacific Time.

I just had to do this yesterday, because when I ran a maintenance utility, the Start button and Facebook and Google apps stopped working on my taskbar.  I could right-click the Start button and access that menu.  Also, Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Mozilla Firefox did work on my taskbar.  The notifications button would not work.

I went to do a System Restore, only to find out that in Windows 10, you have to manually enable this feature (that's User-Friendly?).  So, I felt I did not have any other choice but to do the System Reset, with saving my files.  Of course, I was freaking out when I could not get through my lock screen.  I had to have someone bring me an older-style keyboard  and mouse with the pin plugs on them.  Thankfully, I have that as an alternative right now.

The thing is, I can plug my printer, a flash drive, or an external hard drive, and Windows will recognize the device.  However, when I try to plug in a mouse or keyboard (wireless or wired), it will not recognize the device.  Here is a screenshot of my current situation.

I had the same problem on my sons PC following the Windows 10 software upgrade. Interestingly this has the same ASUS motherboard as my PC which has had no issues to date.

I have resolved (for now) by creating a Windows 10 USB install drive via https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and booting from this drive (F8 on the ASUS).

From the main screen ignore "Install Windows 10" and click on repair bottom left.

I tried the various recovery options including "Restore from a system restore point" as the keyboard and mouse were initially working following the upgrade, but to no avail.

In the end I went for the nuclear option minus 1 of a Reset your PC but leave your personal files intact. This is like a fresh install but keeping all your data.

The keyboard and mouse were working again following this procedure and with trepidation I bought the system up to date expecting them to drop out at any point - they didn't.

It puts an HTML file on your desktop telling you which programs have been uninstalled which was a good opportunity to have a clear out. Most of my son’s games were installed via Steam so it was not a problem for him and interestingly he feels the pc is much faster following this procedure.

Fingers crossed this is a permanent solution?
