Mouse and keyboard input not working after windows 10 upgrade from windows 7.

For those of you with ASUS motherboards the problem with the Windows 10 upgrade causing your once working USB  ports to stop working has nothing to do with the USB drivers and everything to do with a little ASUS utility that is part of their AI Suite II called "AI Charger+".  Its purpose is to boost the power to the USB ports so your devices (iPads etc.) can charge faster.  It turns out THIS app is the culprit.  If you remove it your USB ports will work and you'll finally be able to login to your new Windows 10 system.

You remove the app by first selecting to uninstall the AI Suite II software.  This will bring up a dialog with a list of all the AI Suite II apps.  You ONLY need to select the AI Charger+ to be removed.

You can either remove the AI Charger+ app before you do the upgrade, or after a roll-back to the previous OS - or remove the app from Windows 10 via a remote access program like Teamviewer.  After the app is removed, reboot and watch you keyboard led light up!

A note to Microsoft: this app should be flagged as NOT compatible and removed automatically or the installer should tell the user to remove it manually PRIOR to the upgrade.

Regretfully I feel you are mistaken. The AI Charger+ removal may work for some but I do not feel that's the primary issue, otherwise Non-Asus motherboard users would not have similar issues. I also have an ASUS Motherboard (P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3) very similar to yours, and my PC it does NOT have AI Charger+ installed.

I also believe those who suspect Bluetooth, its drivers or settings being the primary issue are also mistaken that cannot be the primary reason. To many with issues have differing setup and mine cannot be either connected to Ai Changer+ or Bluetooth.

MY reasoning based on MY PC and fact relating to it.

My Set-up

1. I never had the keyboard/mouse issues with several years of using Win 7 Ultimate (x64) on my current set-up.
2. I have an A SUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 Motherboard
3. I did a100% clean full install of Windows 10 Pro (x64) upgrade when Windows 10 was released.
4. The Windows Fast boot feature is enabled (win 10 default)
5. USB 3.0 ports (both from  motherboard back of PC ports and 2 front of PC Case ports) are enabled
6. I use Asus AI Suite II but do NOT have AI Charger+ installed. It was NEVER installed when I clean installed Windows 10.
7. I have NO Bluetooth devices and Bluetooth driver etc. are DISABLED in my PC

Clearly in my case (and no doubt many others), neither AI charger+ or Bluetooth is causing my infrequent Keyboard & mouse issues at Logon of my clean full installation of Win 10 Pro (x64)

MY issues relating to my USB Wired Keyboard & Mouse occasionally being disabled at Logon

8. I had NO keyboard/mouses issues at logon for many weeks then out of the blue it happened. (was this caused by one of the Windows updates was I immediate thought)
9. On the first occasion I had to hard rebooted my PC twice and with the second reboot the keyboard & mouse were recognized normally
10. It did not happen again for around 10 PC boot ups and I thought at the time it was just an isolated "one of those unexplained things"

11). Since then it inconsistently happens about once every15 to 20 PC Boot ups.  On all occasions since the first, it has only needed one soft (reset button re-boot (except once)

12. When I Boot up my PC the motherboard fully recognizes my keyboard EVERY TIME and the Num Lock LED lights up on my WIRED USB 2.0 Microsoft keyboard.  When the Windows start up procedure gets to the light blue windows logo on Black background. This is where the Keyboard is ALWAYS momentarily disables (my Num Lock LED goes out) then its comes back on MOST occasions when the keyboard and mouse are enabled a second later, just before the screen changes to the Win 10 light Blue background and the revolving dots appear  with a "starting "message, which quickly changes to to the Logon screen (Lock screen if that is enabled in my case it is not). Of course if my keyboard and num lock were not re-enabled whilst on the light blue windows logo on Black background then that is when the user find the Keyboard or Mouse are NOT enabled at logon.
13. My mouse and Key board have both always worked continuously during a session if enabled at logon. They have never become disabled during a logged-on session. I use my PC about 7 hours virtually everyday (as retired and at home most of the time)

My Observations and thoughts:

14. Many users (not all) posting here have an Asus Board so Maybe there is a connection. Certainly Asus are very slow  bringing out specific Motherboard Windows 10 drivers (except for one Laptop I believe). I look regularly and am disappointed how slow they are being as they have known Windows 10 was coming for along time.
15. A new observation,that I have only noticed in the last couple of weeks. Which may be a "Red Herring" OR more revealing in helping identify the true issue and finding a solution - beyond me I hasten to add:).

I have a USB 2.0 Seagate FreeAgent External Hard Drive. When I used it with Win 7 and I "safely removed" it, it disconnected (not recognized in Explorer) BUT the power did NOT power off.  A well published registry tweak resolved that making it automatically power down as it did with the Win XP Safely remove default)

My normal habit is the switch off the power supply at the power socket.  I have ALWAYS done this because if it not switched off at the socket, then FreeAgent will power up and be recognized when my PC is booted up next time. As I ONLY use my FreeAgent to do backups, I do not want it on all the time (especially as it can heat up easily as I live in a very hot country).

Since installing Windows 10 Pro (x64) I am sometimes seeing a different occurrence.

If I "safely remove" my Free Agent after use, it does the Win XP default action of disconnecting and automatically Powering off.  HOWEVER at next PC boot up it occasionally does a different thing to Win XP or WIN 7, when I Sometimes have forgotten to switch off the FreeAgent power supply at the power socket. I have noted that occasionally the FreeAgent does NOT power-up automatically even though the power supply to it is on. To get it to power-up and be recognized, I  need to switch the power socket supply Off/and then ON to get it to power up initialize and be recognized

It is interesting the USB drive is occasionally not being started at Boot-up when the power supply to it is is sometimes accidentally left on.  This would seem to be similar to the Keyboard & mouse occasionally not being recognized at Boot-up on my PC. EXCEPT that  the few occasions the FreeAgent did not power-up (although power switch ON at Boot-up the Keyboard and Mouse were working at logon.

For me the problem seems related to Windows 10 (just before the Logon (or Lock Screen if enabled  appears) when Win 10 disables and re-enables (most times) the Keyboard and mouse. Maybe its checking all USB ports by in truth I have no idea. Regretfully on my systemWin 10 occasionally fails to re-enable them at start up

I have the same problem - after upgrade to Windows 10, keyboard and mouse does not work. To get back to using the PC, I unplugged the wireless keyboard that was plugged into a USB port in the back of the PC and plugged it into the front of the PC.  Keyboard and mouse works now. I had to do the same for my printer which was also plugged into a USB port in the back of the PC.

Just to let you know this is a known problem and been posted when doing an upgrade it is best to remove anything that is plugged into a USB port except wired Mouse/Keyboards, and after system upgrades plug things back in and Win10 will find them and load the drivers that is why when you unplugged and plugged back in things start working again.

Glad it worked. I tried your procedure without any success.

What I did not try was pulling the power plug at the win10 first screen of regional settings where the USB ports have failed. This may have forced it to re check drivers, but I would not be hopeful that it would work. Worth a go if you are stuck with no other options.
