Directplay on Windows 10

Like I said before, you may need to copy DPLAY.DLL to the game folder.

In the control panel, add/remove change windows feature, make sure legacy components are enabled to have it available etc.

Barring any issues with skype or your antivirus, this is a problem with windows updates being stuck. jennatar describes the solution at the end of this thread here, which incidentally fixes any issues you might be having getting windows to update properly.

There is no danger enabling Direct Play. It is actually built into Win10, but is disabled by default.

What is a mystery is why MS have elected to not have Direct Play enabled by default, as if it does conflict with anything,

that  would be a far more rare occurrence than leaving people who play old games in the dark.

I have had Direct Play enabled since doing the Win10 upgrade mid 2015 will no ill effects what so ever.

MS have apparently attempted to address this with oversight the pop up window that was introduced with the 1709 version update

that offers to 'install' Direct Play when people try to run an old game that requires it, and have not already enabled it manually.

However, it appears that this new option may be what is actually preventing some people from being able to enable Direct Play via

Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off as well,  which was very rarely, if ever, a problem before the 1709 update .

Not being able to enable Direct Play is what this thread is about. Many people seem to have missed that point, including Duke,

who apparently did not read the OP's question, or other peoples answers.

Having Skype enabled seems to be at least one program that will conflict with enabling Direct Play, but apparently once enabled

Direct Play does not conflict with Skype.

Is it safe to use Directplay?

I want to play GTA San Andreas on Windows 10 and I need to enable Directplay to play it.

Will it turn off any features of Windows 10 if I enable it?

It won’t infect my laptop with virus or anything damaging to the system,right?

I think you have missed the point. Others have shown the way, but a lot of people are/were having a problem enabling Direct Play via P&F.

There is at least one post in this too long thread that mentions Skype , or Anti-Virus as a source of conflict, and disabling Skype

(or other potential conflicting software or Services) can help those having problems with enabling Direct Play.

• I see others have gone the extreme route and reinstalled Win10, which would also have removed any conflicting software.

My guess it they didn't read the post regarding Skype, or didn't troubleshoot other possible conflicting software.
