My problem solved after... "hold my beer!"... reinstalling Windows. Yeap! Reinstall the whole damn thing with all the programs just for a tiny check in Control Panel. :)) But, at least, I can play Heroes II and Disciples again. :D

I can`t install DirectPlay .
When I tried to play Game in windows 10 it asked to install DirectPlay feature. I`ve clicked on 'install this feature' it went on searching for a few seconds & then showed an error 0x800FFFF. Every time I try same happening....

I don't have this (Win10 v1709) switching Direct play on and off problem, so I can't verify myself, but would interested in hearing
if trying to enable from Safe Mode does, or does not work.
[EDIT: No response from those who followed here, but someone on another thread on this topic reckons
enabling Direct Play from Safe Mode didn't help
- I see that several people have had good luck disabling their Anti-virus or Skype temporarily when Windows fails to 'install',
or 'enable' Direct Play from either the option in Programs and Features, or the error message that pops up the first time Win10 detects
an D3D game ( A new 'feature' that came with update 1709) .
- I haven't seen any suggestions to try and fix the problem by running System File Checker.
Don't know if what is essentially a DirectX file gets checked by this tool, but it maybe worth a try. A whole lot easier than
reinstalling Windows, which should not be necessary.

2017-12-24T21:17:33+00:00 Here's another one: The option in control panel doesn't activate. After restart DirectPlay is deactivated. Nice work Microsoft. All my old games I love became useless. Also all the updates from December don't install. Everything asks for a restart and after restart we are back to square one. The people hired to do a job are becoming dumber and dumber.
It stays on with my box so you may have a deeper problem
easier to refresh windows and carry on
