getting error 0x803C010B while runing printer troubleshooter

Original Title: Can't Troubleshoot - get error 0x803C010B 

My printer suddenly stopped printing today and when I run the troubleshooter I get the above error 0x803C010B

I've tried everything - uninstall, re-install, update drivers, configure using TCP/IP - nothing works. The printer always shows offline since last windows update.

Hi All,

Sorry for the delayed response.

For all of those who are using network printers, the reason for the issue to occur can be due to SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). SNMP manages devices on a network. Some Printers may not support this protocol, because this obtains the printer's status regardless of whether or not they support SNMP, although it only supplies simple status information for those devices.

I suggest you to disable the SNMP option from the printer properties. To do that please follow the steps below:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Hardware and Printers option.
  3. Right click on the Network printer (your printer).
  4. Choose Properties.
  5. Go to the Ports tab and choose Configure.
  6. Uncheck SNMP Status Enable option.
  7. Restart the computer and check if the issue persists.

There was as recent update that allows the firewall to let Epson Print inside.  With the amount of attacks that Norton stops, I'm happy to have to figure this out safely and patiently.

    find it strange that the hp instant printing tool finds my printer and I can print from that

    You may get some clues by using ProcMon to trace both of your cases and comparing the traces where they diverge significantly.

    Learned the hard way with this Windows 8.1 error and previous issues with my old Brother printer NOT to set up a printer with both TCP-IP and direct wireless capability if I expected the printer to continue working as a TCP-IP network printer.  Made that mistake with the Brother and after the Windows 8.1 update, it kept deciding NOT to work as a TCP-IP printer.

    When I freelanced, my time billed for more than it does now in my 9-5 job. Figuring how much of my hourly rate I would have lost [mess]ing around with the problem, the money I spent on a Geek Squad contract was easily amortized when they came out and set up my new HP printer as a TCP-IP ONLY device. They also worked with the ports on our three PCs to make sure they recognized the printer.
