Why are we forced to update to 8.1?

It appears you didn't read or understand my post. DLL's aren't replaced, they are amended to offer backward compatibility. You can optimize all the space you want, if it's occupied it's occupied and as dll's get larger, more space is occupied. A 500 Gb SSD is ample for OS and programs, kick the data on a terabyte mechanical drive and enjoy the speed

Well my work computer is a work computer, not a play computer, i.e. no kids allowed, as for apps, I'm still able bodied enough that I don't need "an app for that".

My post also states: "...the tiles that are useless for people who DON'T have a touch screen.." I never said they were useless for people who DO have a touch screen. The taskbar works just fine, pin the frequently used programs there, no need for tiles at all.

I wonder if you are sarcastic or just don't get it with the backdoors. Obviously no one would announce that they have a backdoor in a program, including MS. It is well known that there are backdoors in every program, companies are forced by the US government to integrate them and before you say you've never heard about that, just read papers or search the web. I consider it a backdoor access if I am not asked whether I want to upgrade to 8.1 but instead being told "we're installing 8.1, your computer will reboot". NEVER EVER have I said there is a KB and NEVER EVER have I agreed to installing 8.1. Despite your other posts, yes 8.1 has been forced onto people, without leaving them a choice.

I don't think you understand how DLL files work. They are actually very small files - most of them are under 1Mb in size. A lot of them are simply replaced when an update is applied. The reason why you need to restart your PC after applying some updates is because system files (like DLLs) need to be replaced and cannot be done so while they are in use so it is done either during shutdown or during start-up (typically it's done during start-up). You cannot possibly fill a hard drive via Windows Updates. They can in no way, shape or form, bloat your PC.

In regards to the tiles, they are NOT useless for people who DON'T have a touch screen. I have a Desktop PC with NO touch functionality and I can see the benefit in using tiles instead of a desktop icon. They provide a very functional way of sorting your programs that makes them extremely easy to spot. Sometimes when you overfill a desktop with a "sea of icons", you can't tell what's what. Even if you try to manually create a group of icons on one side of the screen and another group on the other side screen. It's so cluttered. And the taskbar? What good is that? All you see are small icons with no titles and no grouping. It's good for a few icons (under 10) but after that it's just clutter.

And Windows 8.1 was pushed to people so that your operating system can receive the latest updates. There's no good reason why you shouldn't get the update. If a program works in Windows 8, it's going to work in Windows 8.1. If it doesn't immediately, you just need to download the latest update/patch to make it fully compatible.

We will have to agree to disagree, on both DLL's and tiles vs taskbar. I have about 20 different programs sitting on the taskbar and don't need any text to know what icon starts which program. I don't need to revert back to the tile screen or any key combination to get a list and start a program. One click and it starts. Should I suffer from a temporary moment of blondness I can just point to the icon and a little box will pop up with the program name, at least as long as I have given it a name. For programs that have multiple instances (e.g. SQL) I select different icons and things work smoothly. Anything that is not on the taskbar is used seldomly and can be started through the other options. The desktop is no place to store files, have a proper filing system. As someone who works for multiple companies I would be completely hooped if I were to keep documents on my desktop. Not saying it is pristine, but I can't stand a sea of icons.

As for the update, again we have to agree to disagree. I get your point about receiving the updates, what irks me is that my decision to not upgrade is being overridden with no choice to cancel. Plus I don't have auto updates on because there are many updates that are irrelevant and are just window dressing updates or ones that apply to a specific group of users using a specific software or interface. And btw my other computers that run Win 7 still receive updates just fine. It's a marketing choice by MS to not provide updates to Win8 because of the less than lukewarm reception that it received. Finally, a lot of the code underneath Win7/8/8.1 still dates back to Win NT, as proven by a recent discovery of a security issue after 19 years. Not all programs work seamlessly in 8.1, and patches are not always readily available, leading to disruptions.

In regards to DLLs, look it up for yourself. Browse to the C:\Windows and search for all DLL files (*.DLL) and look at the file sizes. The only ones I could find larger than 1Mb were due to Adobe Flash.

Also instead of using the taskbar, Windows also has functionality to set programs to one-click launch as well. The difference though is Windows 8's tiles are better organized than the sea of icons - columns of tiles that can be assigned names, color-coded tiles based off the icon's own colors, and tiles that can be resized to whatever size you prefer.

Updates should be pushed to the client because say someone ran into a technical issue: Most people aren't going to know what caused the issue or if there's a Windows update that resolved this issue months ago. They'll blame Microsoft, spends hours on hold calling technical support, then eventually switch to Apple, blah blah blah, all because they didn't receive an update to fix a known issue. It's better that everyone is at the same version because that's the most stable one. You are less likely to run into issues with the operating system when you have the latest updates installed. It doesn't matter if it applies to you in this very moment, it might affect you in the future like the various security and Windows Defender updates.

And most programs that don't work seamlessly in Windows 8.1 are usually older programs that are no longer supported by their creator. This mostly applies to businesses who continually use outdated software until it's no longer functional or cost effective to use.
