Microsoft Precision Touchpad, not very precise

You need to check with Dell Support, their on-line documentation and drivers, and check in

their forums where there will be others using similar models. Check for newer drivers. As OEM

Dell is responsible for the proper operation of both the hardware and Windows.

The Lenovo X1 Yoga I bought is an expensive piece of kit £2500 and to be honest without a working touchpad it is useless. The trouble is if I now go to Dell for an alternative with my £2500 I will get the same piece of junk with a Dell badge because of Microsoft standardisation so come on Microsoft stop playing the blame game and use your power to sort it out.

The way I understand it is that Dell and Lenovo make the hardware and they also might have a hand in some firmware and low level software to present a common interface to the operating system but the actual driver and controls is part of windows. The standard precision driver connects to the common interface. That is the idea of the precision touchpad to make one standard interface and gesture set that is part of windows and not a random thing set up by each hardware manufacturer.

I also think that Microsoft has a lot of power and they are the one driving the precision touchpad. It wasn’t the likes of Dell and Lenovo getting together forcing Microsoft to create it. It is a Microsoft initiative and as such Microsoft should drive the whole thing through to a fully working product.

I don’t care who is to blame or who should do what. This is a Microsoft enforced standardisation to Microsoft specification and they should ensure it works. Even if this means that Microsoft include a standard of performance as a condition for the “designed for windows” certification.

Actually as the retailer they would report the issue to Dell and then Dell would be responsible. The Microsoft Store might have once given a refund for return however I do not know the timeline they work in for such units (we also have no contact or connection to the store). If you want to have the unit fixed (if possible) you will absolutely need to work with the OEM Maker which for your unit is Dell.

Microsoft knows of the issue which is all an MVP can do. Now it is up to Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, or any other OEM device maker of those touchpads to come up with a solution. So if you want a resolution to the issue then you absolutely need to work with the OEM Maker which again is Dell.

Very sorry however no one here can offer any real help as we don't have a hand in making the device or writing the drivers. Dell does.

MVP's are volunteers who are offering free support. If I had the issue I would be at Dell and not here. Of course you could always take your case to higher level Microsoft Support which will at present send you back to Dell.

I have an old T420 Lenovo Thinkpad that I use for my software development the X1 Yoga was bought to replace it but now that is going back to Lenovo because the 5 year old T420 touchpad is much better. I could never use the X1 day to day like I use the T420. Also my Macbook running windows 10 through with the bootcamp drivers is amazing. Microsoft should copy that. If it was not for the stupid cut down keybord of the Macbook I would buy the best Macbook and put Windows 10 on it.

Until looking at this post I felt like I was in some sort of “Emperors New Clothes” thing with everyone telling me how great the Precision touchpads are and me the only one thinking they are rubbish.

I don’t care who is responsible Lenovo Dell or Microsoft, these are big companies with huge resources that should be able to fix it. I see so many PC manufacturers copying Apple but they are only copying the superficial things if they really want to copy Apple they should copy the parts that truly make Apple good, touchpad being one of them.
