Anyone know what CompatTelRunner.exe is/does?

Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    I'm going to pile onto this thread and say I really, really don't like this running in the background. I don't like anything running in the background that I have not chosen to run, is not real-time virus protection and is not doing anything I need it to do. If it's really just some program that constantly checks for compatibility with Windows 10 ... what the **** is it for? Why do I need it? If I never, ever get Windows 10 for this computer, what's the point?

    My concern is unneeded hard drive usage. I have a four HDD RAID1+0 array, so when this thing is reading 5 TB worth of files, it makes more noise than when I'm generating large HD video files. HDDs aren't exactly cheap, so I don't want to wear out my heads before I get my money's worth.

    That is what happens when companies get too big for OUR good. 

    They decide what they want, regardless of the customer and take liberties with the CUSTOMERS machines, privacy and

    basically anything they do.

    Oh sure, some things you can opt out of...for now.  My bet is that once established, opting out of anything will not be possible.

    Lack of knowledge in the public is fueling the fire.  So often I hear, "Cool", "Great", etc etc.

    from people who do not understand the liberties and data taken from us for those little 'extras' being offered.

    I cannot rant enough about the CLOUD and what that enabled Microsoft and others to have access to from us.

    On a practical note, I cannot upgrade to Windows 10 simply because my computer is used to develop software for a product that is *not* certified above Windows 7.  So simply put, I must run an OS that is compatible with my client's systems, which Windows 10 is not.

    For what it's worth, I stopped that process with no apparent ill affects.  I may be possible to write a simple app to check for it and shut it down.  With all the virus checking and database threads running on my laptop, having more file accesses running in the background is quite a drain.
