Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run.

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

Yeah I don't think so.. not unless there is one on windows 10 as well. And if so what would it be getting me ready for? I did a clean install of windows 10, I haven't had 7 in years... I haven't had 8.1 in nearly 2 years.

Anyway I have a hard drive that is maxed right now, it's been freezing on me randomly for days so after changing the sata cable it booted much faster - but at 100% again! I looked at resource monitor and found CompatTelRunner in disk activity

The problem is that I do not have a Disk E: and every file I now see is E:2\ and so on so what on earth is this thing doing?

I've found a number of 'explanations' of how to stop this programs from running.

None that I tried have worked

There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to when it runs. I just note the drive light on solid,

bring up taskmanger, look for compattelrunner.exe (sort the description for a fast search) and

kill it. I don't see it back for a day or more.

I just tried yet another way, changing the ownership of the file from 'TrustedInstaller' to Administrator

and even with that it still won't delete. The error message, when I attempt to delete it under windows

explorer, did change, it no longer says "You need permission from TrustedInsaller" to "You need

permission from Administrator"!!! But I *AM* the administrator when I performed this!

Obviously, something else I need to do to permanently Kill this vampire.

I can't seem to find any more 'tricks' for getting rid of this, can anyone tell us all how you did it?

or even what doesn't work?

No matter what you do, it will install again with the next Windows Update, and with Windows 10 you can't stop it. I documented how to "cripple it", but it is temporary.
