Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    I found a problem with my Laptop fan spinning so fast that it actually tried to fly off the spindle and hit the metal top of its casing and made a loud clicking noise. I thought that it was dust that caused the noise, but it did not happen all the time and I cleaned out the fan as well. The noise would happen when I first started the computer and once it the noise stopped it did not come back until the next morning. I did some digging around and found a task running every****time the noise started and by deleting this task the noise stopped and the fan was fine for the rest of the day. Turns out Microsoft put out an update which loaded a file that ran every day at 2 AM and if missed would run first thing in the morning. It was a file called "CompatTelRunner.exe" and not only would it cause the fan to run amuck, but also eat up a lot of resources. I found the solution to my problem by disabling the task in the scheduler. I posted a photo on how it is done.

    What you are seeing is that this task is causing your machine to overheat and the fan is doing it's job trying to cool it off.  So there are two issues.  1) this Windows feature is taking a lot of resources, which is what this thread is really about.  This in turn is causing your machine to over heat, which causes your fan to start up.  Actually I "noticed" that on most machines the fans start on startup up and then turn off after they get a good temperature reading. This feature is causing a delay in your fans getting a good reading therefore causing the fans to run longer than necessary.  2)  Your fan sounds like it's dysfunctional.  It's obviously broken, if it's flying off the spindle.  I would replace that fan as soon as possible.

    FYI: I believe this Task is causing hardware to break from the stress its' putting on the hardware.  All of a sudden I had to replace memory, had a hard-drive crash, and my fans are now making noise too.

    Since I stopped this task from running.  No more noise and no over heating and no more lost reasores.   I'm good and no need to replace the fan.  Thanks.
