Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run.

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

So WHY IS IT RUNNING ON WINDOWS 10?

CompatTelRunner.exe is yet another pain in the **** process that runs without permission from the user.

It is a virus written by Microsoft to harvest data and it slows down my PC.

I replaced it with a simple form application to see when it tries to run.

Exactly.

Last week 30 grade 9 students were given the task of writing down 10 things a virus does.

When done they chose 20 of the most common answers of the 300.

Then they looked at Windows 10 options and compared them against the 20 virus results.

In the end all agreed that Windows is in itself a virus by behavior.

Anyone surprised? Try doing the same test yourself.

Just found this sneaky POS running on my Win 7 machine and it's a LIE when MS tell you that it's only there if you've opted IN to the Customer Experience Improvement Program because that, along with a lot of other sh1t, is one of the very first things I opt OUT of or disable each and every time I do an install.

I also NEVER do updates other then pure security ones such as Defender and Malicious software and even those infrequently so however KB2952664 which is responsible for it got in it certainly wasn't by invitation and now it's there it refuses to uninstall.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if this is the start of MS covertly crippling 7 in order to force users to switch to 10.

Going to revert back to one one my stored drive images and then keep a close eye on it to see if it tries to sneak in again.

Unfortunately this is part of Windows 10 too. So if you think upgrading will get rid of it, it doesn't. From what I had seen, it's even worse.

As for it being a left over, I did a clean install of Windows 10, not an upgrade and it's there too.
