I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    The Solid State Disk SSD route helped in my case. I routinely check activity and spotted dozens of running instances of CompatTelRunner.exe and arrived here for education/information purposes.

    The 20 minutes quoted by TH was 15 minutes here on a desktop tower with workstation class performance. Numerous strategies failed to solve. I had wanted for a while to move to Solid State Disk SSD and finally as prices became more reasonable I took the plunge. The installation process was surprisingly straightforward to do with some initial advice from the shop.

    The upshot of all this was immediate responsiveness. from the first moment of start up, as now the disk is no longer maxing out at 100%. There is enough bandwidth free for programs (especially Task Manager and Resource Manager) to run without  the former 15 minutes latency and the initial surge of disk activity soon clears.

    Originally Business edition of Vista was suspected as a cause for double writing files to disk (or so I believed) but having successively upgraded to Windows 7 Pro then Windows 10 that seems remote and in the past.

    I realise you shouldn't have to upgrade to get around the problem (especially with changeover cost and some downtime). Generally improved responsiveness was sought but getting "zero" startup latency was a big benefit. The machine can now be more regularly shutdown and restarted without onerous time penalty and benefit gained from shutdown/startup cycle clearing out memory and paging files.

    Glad to hear about the improvement with SSD.  I've been thinking about upgrading to SSD for a while too.  Technically what you achieved was to reduce the impact, not eliminate it.  The task is still checking your system on every boot, it's just running so much quicker for you now, that it is now unnoticeable.  The issue is stemmed from scheduled tasks MS added back in Window 7 days, but left them after the upgrade to Windows 10.  I posted a while ago about how to disable them on this thread.  Check it out.

    Yeah, right.  I tried to go to Windows 10 and my computer froze up completely.  It cost me $300 to have a technical guy get me re-established with Windows 7.  And even now it's not completely OK, because my hard drive is dithering away.
