"I disagree. I think you should get Windows 10 now"

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run.

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

Hope this helps you

If your not part of the solution,

you're part of the problem.

I had no issues with any games EXCEPT those requiring SafeDisc (SECDRV.SYS).  I had Age of Mythology on CD and will not run.

Asking what this specific EXE does is like asking what does winword.exe do. Alone it does nothing but with the other files included it has a specific and stated purpose.

Searching MSDNyou find that the file name and description is the same for 7 and 8.x.

"This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics help determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system."

I never knowingly "... participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. " but still have it on my system. I purchased a machine with Win 8.0 and upgraded to 8.1 then 10. I do not recall running a Compatibility update when I upgraded. I expect Microsoft just ran this on everyone's PC with their 'free' Win 8.1 and Win 10 upgrades. I say 'free' because we are now seeing everything has a price, even if only running an application you do not want.

One can go with a conspiracy attitude and say Microsoft is spying on every computer that gets the Windows 10 update. I expect they are but that does not mean it is for nefarious / evil purposes. Maybe they are actually trying to make sure each person gets the best experience possible out of the upgrade? Each person gets to decide their own opinion on that subject.

Ah, the basic 'for the better good argument'

One can argue this as a valid point but nevertheless private information obtained without the persons per basis situation IS an infringement of peoples rights. We have a history of this argument being used for purposes that go beyond the original intent and sadly we just allow it to continue.

Recently a local police force wanted cell providers to give up all text messages between a series of cell towers. Not just the individual text messages of who they were investigating, ALL.  An example of an abuse of power we have allowed them, 'for the better good argument'. This is just a Police Force example that came to light publically. Imagine what abuse is happening at higher level of enforcement we never hear about and never becomes public.

My question is where does it stop? Power breeds corruption and people/organizations with 'power' always want more.

    • Imagine if under the 'for the better good argument' we were all forced to strip naked for all airlines flights so nothing could be hidden.
    • Imagine if under the 'for the better good argument' we had to add Government as secondary account holders on our bank account to make sure we are financially stable.
    • Imagine if under the 'for the better good argument' we had to get a scanable tattoo with all our information.

These may seem like imaginary ideas BUT there will always be someone who deems imaginary ideas under the 'for the better good argument' as a good idea.

Go back a number of years and people would NEVER have imagined an internet that tracks users computer use, has access to software/data on users computers and who would have dreamed of such a thing as the 'CLOUD' whereas personal information that is nobody's business accessing is now just a keystroke away.

Who would expected a day the internet would be changed into 1 big virus!
