Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    Thank you for identifying the updates to kill/uninstall/block/hide/disintegrate to stop Windows 10 nonsense (nags, invading systems, narc-ing) to Microsoft, etc.. for those of us who have made an educated CHOICE not to install it. Too many companies want to treat us like dumb sheep, following whoever, wherever they lead.  Keep your eyes and your minds open folks! Its just going to get worse...

    Well said.  I have this issue on a computer that will never be upgraded to Win 10.   This one will always run Win 7 with the photography apps for scanning, etc remaining the same forever.  Just like another system I keep running XP for specific 32-bit driver compatibility for various devices that are attached to that one.  After 30+ years working in the IT field managing practically every OS used  I would have to shout that only a fool would blindly recommend a new OS to everyone without specifically knowing the usage of the computer.  The security issues with cloud access in 10 alone are enough to require careful analysis of whether the OS is right for anyone.  When and if I want to have Win 10 I will buy a new system specifically for it.  Until then folks may want uninstall and hide a few windows updates (KB2977759, KB2952664, KB3068708, KB3022345, KB3075249 & KB3080149) as recommended on the numerous posts around the web for this subject.(Emphasis added 3-3-2016)

    I have a friend who didn't understand all the objections to personal security surrounding The Cloud, Windows 10 etc.

    I asked him to pick a name of a person he knows and we would do a Google search to see what the results would be.

    Here were details we picked up within 10 minutes:

    Her married name and maiden name.

    The names of her parents and siblings with links to check them out.

    Her full address including a Google map to her doorstep.

    Her education level and schools attended. (almost accurate)

    Who she is employed by

    The value of her home.

    Her husbands information with links to check them out.

    Her in-laws names with links to check them out.

    Facebook address

    Twitter address

    From there we could then proceed to connect to and collect information on any of those

    names included in above fact finding search.

    All this in 10 minutes.

    We all hear reports that Fraud, Internet Fraud and Identity Theft are fast becoming the #1

    crime of the century.  Business's have been founded solely for the purpose of 'claiming'

    protection against these crimes. 

    Meanwhile at the same time, a cloud based internet and operating systems are

    making it so much easier for the very existence of these crimes to flourish.

    Information that should not be readily available to even the Police or Policing Agencies without a search

    warrant is becoming available within a few keystrokes.

    Never in our history has there been such an invasion of personal privacy so readily available without

    any sensible restrictions nor with our permissions. Never in our history has anyone, with or without special judicial powers been able to freely invade personal information. 

    Our hard copy mail is protected under stringent laws for our privacy and protection but now every email, letter, picture, correspondence we exchange or write is subject to being held and stored on what we call the 'Cloud', as we type.

    We have in the guise of 'sharing' between units and the advantages of such, given up all our rights to privacy,

    security and safety.

    The COST of this direction is yet to be understood nor is the Cloud Phenomenon even understood by a large

    percentage of the population. 

    Saying, "I don't save anything to the Cloud" is a statement I hear often and is NOT true. It just means that you

    don't deliberately save anything to the Cloud BUT does not mean you do not unknowingly contribute your information, data, pictures, etc whenever you are online. You are simply not aware it is happening.

    Other examples:

    I recently attended a funeral of a family friend.  On the Funeral Home website I offered my condolences.

    I Googled myself yesterday and there is was, my condolence message and a link to take me to the Funeral Home Condolence page.

    Minor infringement but nevertheless it was NOT with my permission**.**

    Google also linked me to a Bylaw Complaint I filed a couple weeks ago regarding a neighbor, with the City I live in.

    Sure enough, Google took me to their website and displayed my complaint verbatim, including all details.

    So much for expectation of a private correspondence between a resident and a City Official.
