Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    jp, as someone else who has been working in the IT field for equal years, it isn't so much about what Windows 10 is now as it is about the direction Microsoft is headed I object to.

    As for the Cloud...there are major concerns.

    Concerns that no amount of reassurance in Security, by any of the many Cloud servers, gives me any relief.

    Having said this, incorporating the Cloud phenomenon into any O.S. should give us all pause.

    I disagree. I think you should get Windows 10 now. In my opinion it is the best Windows OS out there right now the way it functions etc.

    Please don't assume that everyone is prepared to use or accept the changes in Windows 10.

    Well said.  I have this issue on a computer that will never be upgraded to Win 10.   This one will always run Win 7 with the photography apps for scanning, etc remaining the same forever.  Just like another system I keep running XP for specific 32-bit driver compatibility for various devices that are attached to that one.  After 30+ years working in the IT field managing practically every OS used  I would have to shout that only a fool would blindly recommend a new OS to everyone without specifically knowing the usage of the computer.  The security issues with cloud access in 10 alone are enough to require careful analysis of whether the OS is right for anyone.  When and if I want to have Win 10 I will buy a new system specifically for it.  Until then folks may want uninstall and hide a few windows updates (KB2977759, KB2952664, KB3068708, KB3022345, KB3075249 & KB3080149) as recommended on the numerous posts around the web for this subject.

    I just noticed this on a system I'm using to see if it can even run Windows 10 with its configuration.

    This system is not even at its first service pack, and is running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit.

    I had this test machine (DELL Latitude XT2) just at the point where I could sign up to get Windows 10. Just before I could the HD blew, installed a new HD, installed Win7, ran first set of updates and boom. Ran into compattelrunner.exe issues in the system logs, supposedly causing a BSOD, and a un-bootable machine.
