Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    Quote: "If you are still running Windows 7, DO NOT use the provided upgrade process to get Windows 10."  Yes, this is true and have done much to prevent going any farther with GWX.  Have used **GRC'**s little program "Never10" and some of mine own 'hacks' to prevent moving on to GWX.  Thank goodness I used a little of my learnings from previous problems with Microsoft's issues with upgrades.  Hopefully this is just another of their 'hair-brain' ideas that will die with the 'fuss' about their robbing us of our privacy.  That is just another 'wish-full thinking' on my part, do not believe it will save us.

    I do not have schooling in this software, just self-taught and do work for another when needed.  Mostly those that cannot afford the "Geeks" that are charging too much.

    Any progress on an app to shut GWX, GWXUX, GWXDetector and GWXConfigurator down on Win-7?  I have only been able to do it from the Task Manager, but they come back a couple minutes or hours later. I tried removing them from the drive, but Windows stops running with messages like "Can't find GWX".

    The secret to getting rid of the annoying GWX popup permanently is to uninstall Windows Update KB3035583, and then, in the Windows Update settings, make that update permanently hidden. Otherwise it will just re-install again. That will get rid of it.

    If you are still running Windows 7, DO NOT use the provided upgrade process to get Windows 10. There is a problem that occurs after upgrading (happened after 3 months for me) where Windows crashes entirely, and cannot run until you reformat the HDD and re-install. IF you want to go to Windows 10 anyway (warning-it also functions as an advertising platform--I think that is why it was offered for free), you should do it as a fresh install instead.
