Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    For me, the last step of renaming or just deleting the registry entry will work until the next Windows Update.  If I see this behavior, I just go back and do it again.

    For a more permanent solution, there may be some blocker software you can install.  Someone on this tread said they used Comodo CIS successfully.  I dunno, never tried it myself.

    It just happenned again... svchost.exe (LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) was using 40+ MB/sec of my hard drive, scanning...

    At the same time, System was busy writing stuff like Microsoft.Cortana.(etc...), but I also saw something labelled like

    (...)customer.experience.telemetry.(...).evtx

    Anyone can tell me which programs writes *.evtx files? It might be next on my "To delete" list...

    Also, I just went back to Task Scheduler. Tasks that were just run are:

    Windows/AppID: SmartScreenSpecific

    Windows/DiskCleanUp: SilentCleanup

    Windows/DiskFootprint: StorageSense

    Windows/FileHistory: FileHistory (Maintenance)

    Windows/LanguageComponentInstaller: Instalation

    Windows/Management/Provisioning: LogOn

    Windows/MemoryDiagnostic: (Both items, lenghtly names)

    Windows/PowerEfficiency Diagnostics: AnalyseSystem

    Windows/SettingSynch: BackgroupUploadTask

    Windows/Speech: SpeechModel(...)

    Windows/SystemRestore: SR

    (and maybe more that I may have overlooked)

    What's the point to run all those diagnostic apps all at once when a user is working?

    In the same time frame, Resource Monitor did not record any abnormal network activity, and a Windows Defender scheduled scan was skipped.

    It really looks like as if it was an update by Windows Update. However, it hasn't run in several hours...

    Also, I think compattelrunner.exe is merely a "front app" (or "nominee"?) behind which all those apps hide when running. Given I've deleted it, they now hide behind svchost.exe, like so many other windows programs...

    Any thoughts, anyone???

    100% agree. Disk will be at 100% an Ill go to task manager/ process, and every time I see something running high I try to click on it and it moves before I can. I honestly am really skeptical about windows 10. Ive noticed a lot of things different. For instance when I go to internet firewall; I can have all my Wi-Fi settings disabled and under the public settings it'll say connected no matter what I do. Also I go to observe some software and the users of it,( you know,administrator will al be checked, system will be all checked) and for the first time ever, I seen the user of OTHERS with all the boxes checked. Who the **** is others. They gave it away free. I almost think the whole O.S is one big spyware via NSA. In place of the information that snowden reviled
