Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

    And why in the **** would the "compatibility update for win 7 RTM" be running in Windows 10?

    It wouldn't!

    While it is a file contained in "the compatibility update for win 7 RTM", it is not "the compatibility update for win 7 RTM".

    For all versions of Windows start by removing it from Task Schedular:

    1. Start Task Scheduler
    2. Go to: Task Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / Application Experience
    3. Disable all three tasks in that folder
    4. Go to: ask Scheduler Library / Microsoft / Windows / Customer Experience Improvement Program
    5. Disable all three tasks in that folder

    Then for Windows 10 you'll also need to cripple the app from the registry:

    1. Start Registry Editor (regedit.exe) as Administrator
    2. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\TelemetryController
    3. Rename the entry from TelemetryController to TelemetryControllerX
    4. Reboot

    Unfortunately, you'll need to do the latter step again in the future.  I found something had put it back in teh registry just now.

    I did all that last week and now my I7 is NOT running like an I3. It is back to running full speed again

    Huge difference.

    Microsoft is setting themselves up for major trust issues with everyone and many computers being altered to stop their BS.

    Something else that people need to look at is Update History.  I noticed a while back that all 8 computers were running slower than usual. The guilty issue was that each computer was downloading and installing the same Canon printer (networked) update OVER and OVER again. Many pages of the same install happening on each computer.

    There is a file for Windows 10 by Microsoft to correct this. It is called.  wushowhide.diagcab

    It allows you to hide a Microsoft Update if you don't want it.

    Thank You Microsoft for forcing me to hunt for an answer to a problem YOU created with forced updates, making us ALL your Beta testers and wasting my bandwidth repeating the same download over a 100 times on each computer in a few short days.

    I believe that worked - Thanks! Will be interesting to see how long it lasts...

    I have the MS Surface Book with fully updated Win 10, and have opted out of and turned off every bit of telemetry I can find - the default load would cost ~$30/mo in data overage where I live! Nothing had stopped CompatTel until this. Hope it lasts!
