Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?

I agree with Nekked Runner .

Not a good response as I too had the same basic question;

  1. I have a fresh install of WIn7 and running Comodo CIS Anti-Virus that detected this application.
  2. My question too was what does CompatTelRunner do?
  3. My concern is if this is an absolutlety necessary thing or can I shut it down or worse is an infected file?
  4. After repeated questioning it was finally admitted that it is a program that while desireable for those interested in upgrading would not be needed by some people as myself.
  5. From what I gather reading between lines of the respondant is that it is neither necessary nor will there be any negative impact to me by not allowing to to run except that maybe my computer and OS run better without it using resources.

So my solution was to tell Comodo CIS to just block and terminate this application every time it attempts to run. 

I did not have time yet to go though checking the services running to see if it can just be disabled there or if I need to search the registry manually but before going that far I think I may let Revo Unistaller have a go at it.

That is the compatibility update for win 7 RTM.  Care to tell us more about the problem?

    Greetings from the Great Country of TEXAS,

    If you would just right click on the file and select "Properties/Details" it will tell you that it is a Telemetry program.  What is Telemetry?  It is to send data on how you use your computer what you do on your computer, in other  words PROFILING you so they can send unwanted ADS to you from NOW - ON.  There are several places on the web with information on how to STOP this program from running.  Just do a little searching and LEARN.  Will not provide these links here as it is NOT really appropriate to do this here.

    I agree complaining and just repeating the same ole issue is not a solution.

    As an aside, it seems this is not only a Windows 7 issue.

    I upgraded from Windows 7 pro to Windows 10 pro 2 weeks ago.  Today I see this same thing happening on my box.  To the best of my knowledge, this wasn't present before this week's Windows 10 update, so it's possible it's something that they've added back in as a part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

    I know I too have declined to participate in any telemetry tracking, so seeing this "Microsoft Compatibility Telemetry" service running on my machine is disconcerting.

    "Saying, 'I don't save anything to the Cloud' is a statement I hear often and is NOT true. It just means that you don't deliberately save anything to the Cloud BUT does not mean you do not unknowingly contribute your information, data, pictures, etc whenever you are online. You are simply not aware it is happening."

    EVERY website or Content provider, even those mindless Memes on FaceBook, tear jerkers and hug beggers, cute animals and fun surveys, ad absurdium, have a 'Privacy Policy' that discloses their collection, sale and sharing of personal data and anything else they want to pirate from your PC. BUT ... WHO reads the policy?? Who has time to even find them, and opt-out. And most require you to accept them to 'enjoy' the content.

    Couple of years ago, I was browsing the home page of a bowling alley I frequented with friends in high school. Shazam! On the right side of the screen, pops up an ad for Group-On promoting some coupons for other local bowling alleys, and links to more Group-On offers. Included in their ad were the names and photos of two of my FaceBook friends and a tag line about their recent Group-On purchases.

    My FB friends had NO IDEA that had agreed to the use of their names and photos on Group-On ads, and the FB 'platform interfaces' they had agreed to let FB affiliates use to 'follow' their online activity and behavior'.

    Yet, sure enough, there it was buried deep on the Group-On purchase confirmation pages, along with access to their 'FB Friends' list and their friends' contact info.

    So, Google had bought access to all that data, and made it available to the website managers in 'affiliate advertising packages' to spool streams of linked ads. Their common links to ME as a friend had been detected, and Google cashed in on the fees to promote the Group-On ads and split the revenue with the affiliate website manager ... all done at the speed of light.

    Ahhhh ... the power and the shame and disgrace of modern marketing.

    Even the 'News' content, post sequence and priority, ALL info and images displayed in every corner of your screen, had been CUSTOM selected and presented to you based on sophisticared algorithms. Some of them give you general control based on viewing choices.

    Who knows WHERE those options are, or HOW to activate the settngs ... or has (or wants to take) the time to find them??

    Ahhhh ... We have seen the enemy, and it is us.
