Windows 10: Windows Defender will not turn on *SOLVED*

I had recently disabled windows defender on windows 10 and when I did I know want to enable it again but when I open action center and press Turn On Now it does nothing. I have pressed it multiple times and with no result.

Fix:

  1. press Windows Key + R
  2. type regedit
  3. locate the following path *HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS DEFENDER*
  4. Right Click this file and select permissions
  5. press Advanced
  6. where it says owner press change
  7. change the owner to your username
  8. Now press applythen ok
  9. select Full Controlfrom the permissions menu

(click the Widnows Defender folder)

  1. Find the value DisableAntiSpyware and DisableAntiVirus and set these values to 0

(explaination: double click each and where the 1 is put 0 and press ok)

  1. Open services.msc
  2. find Windows Defender
  3. there should be 2 services: Windows Defender Serviceand Windows Defnder Netwrok
  4. right click each and press start
  5. after you have started both restart your computer
  6. Run Windows Defend er

Fix:

    I tried this method, followed all the way; when I was to start those two tasks, it did not allow me to start. gave me an error message. " Error 577: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software form an unknown source. "

    A little background.

    I am running Windows 10 ( direct upgrade from Windows 7 ultimate , not clean install )

    4 G RAM, 32-bit

    My computer was Vista when I bought it , I installed Windows 7 almost right after I got this laptop, and using that system till now.

    I think it might be my computer's hardware limitation, but all the information you posted was very helpful !!!

    no it was not there were a couple things missing in your step by step and the important final one being open service miscilaneous which was not there to open feeling flustered with no windows defender and basically frustrated with a hard to use system so here I sit lost in limbo and now to find Microsoft contact support will be no small feat on this highly respecte(by others( contraption)

    LarrySheldon....I am interested what you learn on your call back.  Was Chatty Cathy L1 or L2 support (I never trust their L1, I just live through it until I get escalated)?  I have Webroot as my AV software.  When I finally lived through the drama of getting Defender installed and running, both are now working.  I know because periodically I get notifications that tell me both are running and that can cause slow downs.  Both applications show that they are on and have recent scan statuses and I don't perceive any slow downs or system problems.  Please let us know after your call if the Microsoft rep confirms Defender should not be used with any other AV?

    L1 I assume.

    I had F-Prot running but never got Defender to run.  (It is installed--you can't get rid of it.)

    The Microsoft position is that the 3rd party software should not run--that is the only way to get rid of the notifications alarms.  (You can run it if you want to, but Defender won't run and the OS will send out a set of three "notifications" every time the 3rd party package updates its data  base.)

    As near as as I can tell Defender CAN'T be used with anything else--I discovered last night that I still had Spybot--Search and Destroy installed on one machine--Defender refused to run.
