New MSN homepage not loading slideshows

I am running windows 8 and was converted to the new MSN homepage. The page itself loads just fine. However, for articles that are slideshows, the main images do not show up. I can see the entire article page and even the thumbnails. The main picture screen remains blacked out. I can not click the thumbnails and there are no arrows to advance the show. I do not see that the page is waiting on any items to load. The box for the image loads, just remains blacked out with thumbnails on the bottom of the box.

I have tried open MSN on both IE10 and google chrome.

As I've said, the page loads correctly, I can even go to the source of the article and view the slideshow on their webpage just fine.

I have no problems with videos or text articles. I thought maybe it was pop- up blockers, etc. but turned them off and restarted with no luck.

Any ideas why only articles with slideshows do not work?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Community. Sorry to hear that slideshows of MSN Homepage not appearing correctly.

Sometimes websites don't look like you expect them. This might be caused by a compatibility problem between Internet Explorer and the site you're on.

Open the website in Compatibility View. Once you turn on Compatibility View, Internet Explorer will automatically show that site in Compatibility View each time you visit. You can turn it off by removing it from your compatibility list.

Fix site display problems with Compatibility View.

After 3 weeks of trying to come up with a solution to this, I think I finally found it.  We have 4 computers in our house.  I know, a bit of an overkill in that there are only 2 of us.    2 desktops, 1 laptop, and 1 tablet.  By checking the NEW MSN on each, I found that the laptop and the tablet showed the slideshows in IE11 but the 2 desktops didn't.  The desktops are custom built.  The other 2 are off-the-shelf.  The custom built machines do NOT have JAVA installed, but the other 2 came with it on each.  Through all the research on this problem, I saw where Microsoft entered into a business agreement with JAVA a few years ago.  Suspect that MSN's site requires JAVA to see those slideshows.  Will probably never know, as I am not subjecting my desktops to potential infections for the risk of viewing a few pictures.  Besides, I use Firefox as a browser backup and it shows the slideshows, after I updated Flash Player.  Not tested, just a theory.

Thanks BradSary for sharing your insight.

I too am not a fan of JAVA.

That leaves us with other browsers - at least until MS provides a direct and simpler fix.

Good news!? Finally, I got a chance to do some debugging with the Developer Tool in IE11.  It was blocked by the Tracking Protection feature.  Here is the simple fix:

Click on Setting (little gear on top right) | Safety | Turn off Tracking Protection.  Refresh the page.

Tada!.... I guess they added more tracking features.

The choice is totally up to you.  I'm not making a recommendation.  Enjoy!

    Thanks, Boneo-TX.

You solved the problem. It works.

Now, does turning off Tracking Protection leave you vulnerable?

But it works and I thank you for solving the problem for many of us?
