New MSN homepage not loading slideshows

I am running windows 8 and was converted to the new MSN homepage. The page itself loads just fine. However, for articles that are slideshows, the main images do not show up. I can see the entire article page and even the thumbnails. The main picture screen remains blacked out. I can not click the thumbnails and there are no arrows to advance the show. I do not see that the page is waiting on any items to load. The box for the image loads, just remains blacked out with thumbnails on the bottom of the box.

I have tried open MSN on both IE10 and google chrome.

As I've said, the page loads correctly, I can even go to the source of the article and view the slideshow on their webpage just fine.

I have no problems with videos or text articles. I thought maybe it was pop- up blockers, etc. but turned them off and restarted with no luck.

Any ideas why only articles with slideshows do not work?

Hi,

Thank you for posting your question on Microsoft Community. Sorry to hear that slideshows of MSN Homepage not appearing correctly.

Sometimes websites don't look like you expect them. This might be caused by a compatibility problem between Internet Explorer and the site you're on.

Open the website in Compatibility View. Once you turn on Compatibility View, Internet Explorer will automatically show that site in Compatibility View each time you visit. You can turn it off by removing it from your compatibility list.

Fix site display problems with Compatibility View.

After 3 weeks of trying to come up with a solution to this, I think I finally found it.  We have 4 computers in our house.  I know, a bit of an overkill in that there are only 2 of us.    2 desktops, 1 laptop, and 1 tablet.  By checking the NEW MSN on each, I found that the laptop and the tablet showed the slideshows in IE11 but the 2 desktops didn't.  The desktops are custom built.  The other 2 are off-the-shelf.  The custom built machines do NOT have JAVA installed, but the other 2 came with it on each.  Through all the research on this problem, I saw where Microsoft entered into a business agreement with JAVA a few years ago.  Suspect that MSN's site requires JAVA to see those slideshows.  Will probably never know, as I am not subjecting my desktops to potential infections for the risk of viewing a few pictures.  Besides, I use Firefox as a browser backup and it shows the slideshows, after I updated Flash Player.  Not tested, just a theory.

    Thank you, yellowNinjakitty & David42.

I am surprised that Microsoft has totally ignored this problem as it affects so many Windows and MSN users. Perhaps, they are focusing on "Cloud" services and moving away from software products - something to keep in mind before buying MS software products or upgrading to Windows 10, whenever it is available in debugged form..!

Until then, I am moving to Yahoo platform on my computer.

    Thanks again.

After all of my struggles, here is what I found out.

The problem does lie in the fact that I am running Windows 8.1 64 bit. (Which was forced upon me yesterday.) 32 bit appears to not have these issues.

I was able to view the slidesows only after a system restart and they would only work until the system went into sleep mode, then nothing. This happens in Chrome. IE and Firefox will not start slideshows at all.

I was forced yesterday to install Windows 8.1- I had been windows 8 when I had brief success. Windows 8.1 does NOT let me view them even after a restart.

I can not believe that MSN would force all of the changes and NOT make sure their own products work correctly together. The only viable answer is to go with another homepage. Way to go MSN!!!

There is no work around or patch to make it work correctly at this point. If you are having similar issues- page loads correctly, videos are fine, and see only a black box where the slideshow should be- then you are in the same boat.

MSN has to fix this on their end. End of story.

Thank you David42 for all of you page suggestions! That is the only thing that can be done until a fix is released.
