KB3023607 repeatedly removed by deepclean after KB3032359/KB3021952 (5.2mb ea) repeatedly offered/installed...

KB3021952 (Feb "Cumulative" Update for IE) invloves a "bundled" update, it includes KB3023607. KB3032359 (March "Cumulative" Update for IE) is "bundled" it includes KB3040335 & KB3023607 (Again???) KB3032359 (allegedly) supersedes KB3021952 but both are needed along with KB3023607 to have a fully patched system. The problem occurs when Windows Update Cleanup (deepclean) is run after all patches are installed, it removes KB3023607, the "bundled" update as superseded :

The KB's 3021952 & 3032359 (5.2mb) that are continually removed/re-offered/re-installed/re-removed... lather, rinse, repeat... are actually the child package component KB3023607 which gets removed by deepclean.

At this point, it's evident that MS needs to investigate why Windows Update cleanup detection logic is ...broken (for lack of a better word) on some user's computer's only, there has to be a "missing link" ... I'm out of ideas and don't see too many here or elsewhere on the Innernetz

I have 2 options to correct the problem of KB3031432 not appearing in Installed Updates but yet the MSU installer returns the message KB3031432 is already installed... and the PendingDeletes that won't.

  1. Repair Install
  2. Restore from prior backup image (2/12/15, after Feb Black Patch Tuesday, tested on spare HDD.

Thank to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to "J"... seems you're one of the few I've seen around here that "gets" it.

Edit to add: I have successfully restored my system to a previous backup image (2/12/15) prior to the "March Patch Madness" described in my OP, uninstalled the troublesome KB2852386 that enables Update Cleanup and re-applied the March '15 patches, all now appear in Installed Updates, including KB's 3023607, 3035131 & 3031432. Kindly mark this as "Answer" as I consider this matter resolved... if only temporarily.

    Result of Freak attack check in IE11:

    FREAK Attack: Client Check

    Good News! Your browser appears to be safe from the FREAK attack.

    This tells us that KB3032359 (which includes everything in KB3023607 & KB3021952) as well as KB3033929 both have been successfully installed.

    That being said...

    1. Is KB3035131 listed in Installed Updates now and if not, is KB3023562 listed?
    2. When did you last run Disk Cleanup with the "deepclean" option enabled?
    3. Any particular reason UAC is disabled?

    well... not at all... but at the moment I don't see any reasonable solution except hiding both updates...

    ...

    so it's likely nothing more than some small fault of MS guys who drink too much beer on weekend before Patch Tuesday... and as far as I remember the similar issue already occurred once with another update earlier maybe a year or two ago... that update was installed, then reoffered again, then put to hidden list, then disappeared from the hidden list... when that time issue was finally patched by MS.

    p.s. sorry I don's see any KB3023607 around...

     

    ...or install the "two" offered KB's & don't run deepclean... at least till next patch Tuesday. If you hide the 2 offered KBs @5.2mb ea subsequent WU check will offer KB3008923, Jan "Cumulative" IE11 Update (screengrab below) bringing the grand total of "Cumulative" IE Updates needed for a  fully  patched

    Internet Ex-PLODE-r to a whopping 4 @ around 195mb or so. WTH???

    If you hide that one & want even MORE pain/grief WU offers KB3003057, Dec Ex-PLODE-r Cumul Updt, Hide that, Nov, Oct... ad nauseum/infinitum.

    If you install the two offered KB's then check Installed updates you'll see KB3023607 installed. If you care to gaze at the actual physical KB in the cyber-flesh here's the direct d/l link grabbed from Win updates log:

    well... not at all... but at the moment I don't see any reasonable solution except hiding both updates... after 2 circles of the normal way installation of both - 1st as full one, 2nd - as short of 5.2MB each.

    also I can confirm a visible background of this issue as below:

    1. both these updates are surely installed when IE11 version is now 11.0.9600.17691 [Update version 11.0.17 (KB3032359)]. and both are listed in installed updates list in normal way, i.e. both available to be uninstalled, etc. if need.
    2. windows cleanup procedure doesn't harm the above status in any way (!) but in case of these two updates only this standard windows cleanup seems to change a system internal flag for both updates from 'installed' to 'missed' along with the requested deletion of updates backup files despite of an actual status of both as installed. that's all.

    so it's likely nothing more than some small fault of MS guys who drink too much beer on weekend before Patch Tuesday... and as far as I remember the similar issue already occurred once with another update earlier maybe a year or two ago... that update was installed, then reoffered again, then put to hidden list, then disappeared from the hidden list... when that time issue was finally patched by MS.
