KB3023607 repeatedly removed by deepclean after KB3032359/KB3021952 (5.2mb ea) repeatedly offered/installed...

KB3021952 (Feb "Cumulative" Update for IE) invloves a "bundled" update, it includes KB3023607. KB3032359 (March "Cumulative" Update for IE) is "bundled" it includes KB3040335 & KB3023607 (Again???) KB3032359 (allegedly) supersedes KB3021952 but both are needed along with KB3023607 to have a fully patched system. The problem occurs when Windows Update Cleanup (deepclean) is run after all patches are installed, it removes KB3023607, the "bundled" update as superseded :

The KB's 3021952 & 3032359 (5.2mb) that are continually removed/re-offered/re-installed/re-removed... lather, rinse, repeat... are actually the child package component KB3023607 which gets removed by deepclean.

At this point, it's evident that MS needs to investigate why Windows Update cleanup detection logic is ...broken (for lack of a better word) on some user's computer's only, there has to be a "missing link" ... I'm out of ideas and don't see too many here or elsewhere on the Innernetz

I have 2 options to correct the problem of KB3031432 not appearing in Installed Updates but yet the MSU installer returns the message KB3031432 is already installed... and the PendingDeletes that won't.

  1. Repair Install
  2. Restore from prior backup image (2/12/15, after Feb Black Patch Tuesday, tested on spare HDD.

Thank to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to "J"... seems you're one of the few I've seen around here that "gets" it.

Edit to add: I have successfully restored my system to a previous backup image (2/12/15) prior to the "March Patch Madness" described in my OP, uninstalled the troublesome KB2852386 that enables Update Cleanup and re-applied the March '15 patches, all now appear in Installed Updates, including KB's 3023607, 3035131 & 3031432. Kindly mark this as "Answer" as I consider this matter resolved... if only temporarily.

    anyhow. seriously. your questions.

    1. the requested by you WU (it's set to MSU in my case) check for updates was done earlier and right now a number of times and returning NO ANY FURTHER UPDATES, when now those two troubled updates KB3021952 & KB3032359 (2nd appearance)were installed a few times repeatedly, MSU files cleaned, and both put to the hidden list.
    2. in my case KB3008923 is listed as installed from Dec. 10, 2014; and KB3035131 - from March. 11, 2015.

    Note: I assume it easy to check if any MS Update is actually installed to Windows or not. Just search the registry for its KB#. For instance in my case:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ApplicabilityEvaluationCache\Package_for_KB3008923~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~11.2.1.0

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ApplicabilityEvaluationCache\Package_for_KB3035131~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1

    1. ok. it's clear about a fancy name of deepclean. no problem here.

    sorry there is neither any KB3023607 around me nor any traces of...

    although I don't see a problem here since the configuration of our Win7s could be different in some part...

    1. with the two KB's 1952 & 2359 (5.2mb) hidden did you/can you please go to WU and click the "Check for Updates"  and re-confirm that no further update (KB3008923) is offered?
    2. KB3035131 will be listed as installed if you manually install it before installing KB3033929.
    3. "deepclean" is just a "fancy" name for the Windows Update Cleanup line listed in Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) because it produces a log in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ called DeepClean.log I refenced it in my OP:

    I have found that you must hide those two updates(  KB3021952 & KB3032359)  as well to not get repeatedly prompted for reinstall.

    I cleared my windows update cache and then checked for updates , after a long search those same two came up again , i decided to see what happens this time by installing so i did .

    The thing that installed was update kb3023607 , there is no  KB3035131   installed though.

    well, well, well... this deep inside & high pro approach to study this issue in very detail kindly offered by MVP becomes more and more interesting....

    so here is my penny to this discussion based on my case that looks a bit different:

    1. when both KB3021952 & KB3032359 were installed twice or triple times and hidden [naturally after WU/MSU backup files cleanup] then, there were no any further updates [like the above mentioned KB3008923] offered.
    2. my result of FREAK Attack online check is same good.
    3.  KB3035131 is listed in Installed Updates.
    4. since UAC is always disable as my PERSONAL PREFERENCE (that simple!) I know nothing about some deepclean option of one of MS Win7 standard integrated functions known as cleanmgr.exe and use its another option available w/o UAC to cleanup MSU/WU backup files... it's named something like Update Files. and I usually clean all update backup files after MS Patch Tuesday.
