KB3023607 repeatedly removed by deepclean after KB3032359/KB3021952 (5.2mb ea) repeatedly offered/installed...

KB3021952 (Feb "Cumulative" Update for IE) invloves a "bundled" update, it includes KB3023607. KB3032359 (March "Cumulative" Update for IE) is "bundled" it includes KB3040335 & KB3023607 (Again???) KB3032359 (allegedly) supersedes KB3021952 but both are needed along with KB3023607 to have a fully patched system. The problem occurs when Windows Update Cleanup (deepclean) is run after all patches are installed, it removes KB3023607, the "bundled" update as superseded :

The KB's 3021952 & 3032359 (5.2mb) that are continually removed/re-offered/re-installed/re-removed... lather, rinse, repeat... are actually the child package component KB3023607 which gets removed by deepclean.

At this point, it's evident that MS needs to investigate why Windows Update cleanup detection logic is ...broken (for lack of a better word) on some user's computer's only, there has to be a "missing link" ... I'm out of ideas and don't see too many here or elsewhere on the Innernetz

I have 2 options to correct the problem of KB3031432 not appearing in Installed Updates but yet the MSU installer returns the message KB3031432 is already installed... and the PendingDeletes that won't.

  1. Repair Install
  2. Restore from prior backup image (2/12/15, after Feb Black Patch Tuesday, tested on spare HDD.

Thank to everyone who replied, and a special thanks to "J"... seems you're one of the few I've seen around here that "gets" it.

Edit to add: I have successfully restored my system to a previous backup image (2/12/15) prior to the "March Patch Madness" described in my OP, uninstalled the troublesome KB2852386 that enables Update Cleanup and re-applied the March '15 patches, all now appear in Installed Updates, including KB's 3023607, 3035131 & 3031432. Kindly mark this as "Answer" as I consider this matter resolved... if only temporarily.

    Tested in VM, same conditions as above "live" system. None of the Kernel updates were listed in Installed Updates. KB's 3021952, 3032359 & 3023607 listed in Installed Updates, as well as KB3033929.

    IE ver 11.0.17 KB3032359

    Here's what I did in chronological order:

    Uninstalled KB3033929. Rebooted.

    Installed manually KB3035131 standalone. Rebooted, KB3035131 shows in Installed Updates.

    Installed manually KB3033929 standalone. Rebooted. KB3033929 shows in Installed Updates.

    Checked for available updates, WU clean (no updates available)

    Ran (but did not execute) Disk Cleanup. DeepClean detects KB's 3023607 & 3035131 as superseded and marks for removal. (dunno if that's correct description) Pertinent bits from deepclean log:

    Seems like a good temporary fix until MS fixes the deepclean bug, do you agree? I'll hold off on executing these steps on my "live" system pending further reply.

    None of those is listed in Installed Updates.

    My mistake Re: Feb 10/ Feb-15.

    I am also not going argue/haggle over semantics; reissued, included, it's the same to me as an average user.

    I'm not going to argue with you here but IMHO KB3023607 has nothing to do with your problem.

    • As long as (a) KB3032359 is listed in Installed Updates and (b) you stop using the "deepclean" (Windows Update cleanup) option when running Disk Cleanup, neither KB3032359 nor KB3021952 should be offered again via Windows Update or Automatic Updates.
    • Alternately, you may hide KB3032359 & KB3021952 if still being offered as long as KB3032359 is already listed inInstalled Updates.

    [No, I dunno how MS "broke" it but they did. We'll just have to wait until they fix it.]

    For the record, KB3023607, released 10 Feb-15, was not "reissued" on 10 Mar-15: It was included in  Cumulative [emphasis added] Security Update for Internet Explorer (KB3032359) - as was every other previously-released-but-not-superseded update for IE...plus 20 or so previously-released GDR fixes. [See the "non-security-related fixes" section of https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3032359.]

    Now to more important matters IMHO => Please confirm that neither KB3035131, KB3023562 nor KB2785220 is listed in Installed Updates on the computer-in-question.

    Why was the TLS "Poodle" fix (KB3023607) which was patched 2/10 & working fine tyvm reissued 3/10 .which broke deepclean detection logic, or whatever it's called  (I'm guessing?) on many users machines.  If it ain't broke, M$ fixes it!

    ADDING: pertinent bits from deepclean:

    (which indicates 3023562 was installed, was superseded by 3035131, which was installed thru WU and according to the FAQ both updates should install automatically and both should appear in the list of installed updates, but KB3035131 does NOT show in Installed Updates and you conclude "there's something very wrong with my install of Windows?

    Seriously?

    And what (if anything) does this have to do with KB3023607 being (wrongly) detected by WUC after a previously (working) patch was.... wait for it.... reissued.
