KB3013455 (MS15-010) causes font corruption

February 2015 update KB3013455 causes 'Courier New' font corruption on some Windows systems, I can confirm it for Windows Server 2003 and 2008. You can verify it in Notepad. Removing the update fixes the issue.

Windows 7 and 8.1 are not affected by the update.

Yes Remove/Add Program >> View Installed Windows Updates >> I added the column to display installation date, reverse sorted and found "3013455" ((this update), then Uninstalled it.

This was common in the late 90's/early 2000's, had to remember which updates not to install that would break things. It's been solid for at least a decade, now this.

I don't really care what the fix is for. If I can't read my screen from my chair, I need to resolve it to do my job (own a web design firm).

I share the same opinion as this article "...the bottom line here is that if you want to be able to actually read the screen, you'll want to hold off installing this update until the problem is fixed."

Choose your OS from the half dozen big options at the top and it brings you right to the download page.

Hit the big red download button and it should offer you two updates:

kb3013455 (the original that breaks fonts)

and

KB3037639 (the secondary update to fix fonts)

I installed the original, said do not reboot, and installed the second.

After reboot I appear patched and my fonts are good.

MS15-010 includes two updates:

3013455 = Elevation of Privilege

3023562 = Security Feature Bypass

It's only https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3013455 that has the font issue.

Of the issues you aren't patching for by not installing KB3013455- http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2015-0003 that's the highest one. This isn't a remote code execution vuln, it's a elevation of privilege attack - meaning that it will be blended with another cocktail of vulns that attackers can use. In standalone workstations, not in a domain, I'm WAY more concerned about zero day flash exploits and cryptolocker quite frankly. While I don't want to in any way excuse Microsoft from fixing this, I'm not totally freaking out if you have to uninstall it in order to see the fonts on the screens so you can do your job.

In the meantime, think before you click - which we should be doing anyway. Always have a good antivirus and always be a tad paranoid.

No, it's not a repaired version. It's simply another security patch. The description in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3023562 is a bit misleading. The "summary" is not for this specific patch, but for the whole security bulletin package of MS15-010 which consists of two update packages (3013455 and 3023562), all in all patching 6 security issues. The summary of https://support.microsoft.com/kb/3013455 is just identical, summarizing what the bulletin says.

Vielen, vielen Dank, mein Freund. I have just now applied 3023562 and have no font problems. I withdraw my earlier comments about it. I do not have 3013455 applied and all is working well now.

So is 3023562 the repaired version of 3013455??? The technical description of MS15-010 does not say this but it also does not say much about 3023562.
