Hi,

Keep getting the above error in the system log and chkdsk keeps running on startup and never repairs anything.  Thought it was an issue with system protect, so removed it form both drives and applied it again, but it did not fix the issue.  I'm out of ideas.

The link is for an English (USA) language copy. Say if you need a different language version.

You will need first to create a new partition (call it J partition) taking 50gb disk space from your C partition. I suggest you use Easeus Partition Master (freeware) to resize your C partition and create J partition.

The first step is to reduce the size of C by 50gb to create unallocated space after C of 50gb. This enables you to create your new partition in the unallocated space. When you have done the above apply the changes.

When the new partition has been created, you can download and run set up from within J partition to repair your existing Windows installation. It doesn’t work if you try to run set up from your C partition. The alternative is to burn a DVD. The instructions to follow are at 4. Repair Installed Windows 7 SP1 using Windows 7 with SP1 ISO

Once you have completed the instructions in Step 4 you move to Step 7 and then work down the list. The process takes several hours so if you choose to try it make sure you set aside sufficient time to complete the Upgrade. When it has completed you will need to activate and then run Windows Update to bring the system completely up to date. To safeguard against something going wrong I recommend you create a system image using Windows BackUp and Restore before you start.

You should also back up your data files to external media before starting on the In Place Upgrade.

An In Place Upgrade leaves all your installed programmes, settings and data files undisturbed. This has considerable advantages over a restore to factory settings, where everything has to be rebuilt from scratch. The only things you will need to do are to activate Windows 7 using your product key and reinstall all windows updates post the Windows 7 SP1 update. When you have finished you can leave J partition as it is or delete the partition and return the space to C partition.

    Yes, I followed your instructions but burnt the ISO onto a DVD instead.

    Solution was to run the in place upgrade from the installation DVD.

    Your installation DVD presumably was one including the SP1 update?

    Just thought I post this for the record, in case this thread can help someone else.

    This all came about after the PSU on my PC started to fail, it was freezing, BSOD-ing and restarting a lot and after replacing the PSU all these issues stopped.  Except it was running chkdsk everytime I started it. Summary of steps taken:

    1. Ran MemTest86+ for 8 hours plus with no problems
    2. Contacted Samsung support (manufacturer of the SSD with the problem) and they said it was OK
    3. Ran Windows Repair several times and each time it said it couldn't repair the install
    4. Solution was to run the in place upgrade from the installation DVD.

    Errors happened at random times and were frequent (up to 10 times an hour) which made me think I had an hardware issue, but turns out it was a corrupt OS caused by the PSU failing.

    Thank you SO MUCH Gerry, really happy to finally get this fixed.

    Learned a lot during this process and have an Windows installation DVD again, so all in all it's been good.
