Here is an article from AAIIMoney that evaluates in detail the SmartMoney.com, Morningstar.com and Wikinvest portfolio trackers. Its pretty good.

This Comparison article examines the top online portfolio tracking websites for individual investors. The focus here is on everyday investors and not on power traders or institutional investors, so top sites in this category should have a good balance of power and functionality, along with a reasonable price tag. FYI, that is from 2012 not this year. Wikinvest has been relaunched as SigFig which merely redisplays what is already in ones brokerage account vs being able to add/edit transactions. SmartMoney is now part of Marketwatch and also merely redisplays what is in ones brokerage account. Morningstar is probably the closest alternative to the old MSN Portfolio Manager where you can add/edit transactions although it does have a limit of 100/200 symbols in each free/paid portfolio.

I knew it was 2 years old and I hoped things hadnt changed very much (wrong again).

First, ONLINE PORTFOLIO TRACKING SITES such as Morningstar.  AAII says that Wikinvest allows you to link a brokerage accounts or to manually add holdings to a portfolio. Perhaps Wikinvest is an option.

Ah, did not realize the last sentence of your post describing it as "this year's" was copied from the article itself :) Thanks for the additional links, it is hard finding up to date info on these kinds of services / software.

After logging in and taking another look, it turns out you can indeed optionally add transactions one by one at Wikinvest, its replacement SigFig and MarketWatch.  MarketWatch also offers to import a CSV file if you have one. Don't know if they added that since I last checked them out or I merely overlooked it as their services really seem designed for those wanting the simplicity of linking ones brokerage account(s).

I have not tried Quicken nor found any other software worth mentioning. For the time being, I am using a Google spreadsheet containing the transactions I was able to export from my brokerage.

Is there a way to export from PM to Morningstar, or will I have to type in all previous transactions?

I entered all mine in manually.

I won't beat a dead horse and it appears that portfolio manager is a dead horse and isn't revivable.  That said, I tried again after about six weeks to reimport everything and I noticed some issues.  Things are better but here's some issues:

Arithmetic doesn't work quite like in original Portfolio Manager.  We originally entered shares to four decimals, now only two are being shown but that's causing problems.

If I bought 100 shares and sold 100 shares, all is well,  But if I dripped and had reinvested dividends of .0123 and .2345 shares, it's virtually impossible to exactly balance, leading to issues showing as having .00 shares but still active, and possibly invalid transactions.  For example, I have a summary position in PM of .45 shares but the transaction where I sold .448 shares is being flagged as an error.  I dropped it to .44 shares and it went through and now PM is still around but showing .00 shares.

I once held Wrigley gum (WWY) which no longer exists so now all my transactions are listed as invalid.

Mutual funds are having issues; the buys are sometimes okay, sometimes they are displayed with every field starting with the date as a field of a hyphen, then the true field value, then a hyphen, then the next true field value, etc.  Then the summary totals are off too.

Adding transaction NOTES are going in as a virtually invisible font.

Also, for my desktop PC, I have about 20 watchlists, and it's virtually impossible to get to the 'Manage Watchlists line, as it's hidden and only some random clicking and scrolling has it appear.  It should be at the top of the watchlists along with Create New Watchlist.
