KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

Not here either, until I restored the rest. The update completed perfectly then. Just get a donor system, or backup and make your own. This fix was simple.

I used 8.1 pro unactivated (generic key, msdn), updated to 8.1 update 1.

Error 0x80070002 here! oddly enough at home the 800_ meg update went in fine ( downloaded installed in 15 minutes, machine is working splendidly)

Here at the office, less than 30 minutes later I tried it on up-to-date Win8.1 workstation.. . ODDLY ENOUGH the download size was only 400-odd megs! (hmmm...)

Anyway, downloaded slowly, then STUCK AT 4%.

    Then UPDATE FAILED.

    Retried it 3X same results.

SAME THING ON ANOTHER WORKSTATION DOWN THE HALL :-(

This is turning into a LONG NIGHT AT THE OFFICE.

    GEE THANKS, MICRO$OFT!!

Online, looking for fixes. Tried the OFFICIAL fix thingy... it found some bad files, but reported it could not fix the update error.

Then I found the legendary "manual fix" (log in as admin, stop the WU service, rename the \Windows\SoftwareDistrubution\ folder...) try again. NO LOVE!!!

Chiming in with the chorus here. PLEASE FIX THIS.. I have six workstations just "upgraded" to win8.1 from XP.. the last thing I need is all my users being crashed and burned by faulty windows updates. They were not thrilled about learning w81 quirks, to begin with. (even though I installed ClassicShell to make then comfortable as possible, they still were getting dumped into Modern interface now and then, much to their dismay...)

and good MS people.. what the **** went wrong?? Win 8.0 was ROCK SOLID for me for many months, certainly in my opinion it was THE BEST WINDOWS EVER MADE ( and I've been running Windows since VERSION ONE...) But ever since 8.1 came along, its been one disaster after another!!! SAD...
