KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

    Critical Update Fixed

Thanks to other members of the Community for the different commands listed below!

    History:

Successful install on one desktop with SSD drive and Windows 8.1 64 bit Pro with Media Center installed over Windows 7 and then moved to the SSD drive).  PC has multiple operation systems (dual boot).

Does not complete install on Desktop with Hybrid drive and Windows 8.1 64 bit (clean install).  DISM text file shows problems with filename, directory name, or volume label syntax being incorrect.  Later on the file shows not enough disk space.

Does not complete install on Laptop with SSD drive and Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center 64 bit (installed over Windows 7).  DISM text file shows problems with filename, directory name, or volume label syntax being incorrect.  Later on the file shows not enough disk space.

Potential reasons for this update failing:

    1. Corrupted files on some of the servers providing the update.  If the initial download hangs at 3% (my desktop after cleaning up the errors, see below), 13% (my brother’s laptop which installed the first time) or 14% ((my laptop after cleaning up the errors, see below) before completing the download and starting the install, the install appears to work.  If it stops at 6%, it always fails.  Note: once the install fails once it causes corruption of Windows Update and leaves files behind.
    2. Unable to find the correct Directory, Folder, or Filename (If this was written properly, they would have searched the whole PC for the directory or folder that they needed and then if it can’t be found, they should terminate the process at that time instead of trying to install everything and then having to reverse it.  I have tested software for years and have seen things hard coded or set to a specific location and if something caused this location to change it always leads to failure.  Just my opinion, of course).
    3. Not enough disk space (I don’t know where it is trying to install but disk space doesn’t seem to prevent successful install on both systems with a large or small hard drive.  Problem 2. Would cause this).

Installation successful on both the desktop and laptop after multiple failed installs:

What finally appeared to work (Disclaimer: it took three days and a lot of trial and error to get to this point; so I can’t promise this will work for you!):

    Desktop:

    1. Correction added - I temporary disabled my AVG anti-virus until restart (I am not sure this is necessary as my good install worked without disabling my anti-virus).
    2. On the Desktop, I ran the manual update (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=42327 )   )which failed and on the laptop, I tried to install the Windows 8.1 ISO (http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-download-the-official-microsoft-windows-8-1-iso/ ) after the Windows Updater update failed but didn’t have the Generic key so I aborted the process.  Not sure this is relevant but I never got a successful install until I did this!  The manual update could probably be substituted for the ISO disk.  I am guessing that even though it failed, the manual update might have provided the proper Directories, Folders, and at least some of the files needed after the roll back.
    3. Then on both systems, I used System Restore to go back to before the update was applied.
    4. Used the command window to perform the following DISM commands (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825265.aspx) :
      1. Open admin command prompt. (This is how: you can go to search charm, type "cmd" then right click on the Command Prompt and select Run as administrator)
      2. Type the following command and press enter: DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355.
      3. You will notice package name similar to this, the amd64 could be different based on OS architecture: Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
      4. If you see no output for step c then jump to step g.
      5. Otherwise run following command: DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:<Name of the package you got from step c.  The exact command will look like the following: DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14
      6. Restart your computer.
      7. Now run following command: DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
      8. Then run DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
    5. Reset Windows Update components using the following: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
    6. Now install KB2919355 and restart after install.
    7. After logging in, you should see the desktop with a link to the Windows Store in the bottom taskbar and if you switch to the Start page  power options and search options are found just right of your name (if you see those items then congratulations, you have a successful install).

    Notes:

    1. DISM is temperamental and some commands may have to be run more than once.
    2. Also, Reset of Windows Updater components doesn’t always take the first time and may have to be re-run.

We are currently investigating Error 80073712 when installing KB2919355.  Our escalation agents are actively engaged with many of the posters in this thread to help identify the root cause of this error.

Vivian, thanks for the update. I hope escalation agents are also investigating 800f0092 which is among the errors reported by the OP and many others and is the code displayed for my last failed install. Of course, if 80073712 has been identified as the root problem and other codes are derivative then it makes sense to narrow the focus.
